Spring has (finally!) sprung. Not only do the Spring gods bring with them warmer weather, pretty flowers, and horse racing; it’s also that time of year when love is in the air for peak wedding season. And what’s a wedding without a good hens’ celebration?
Forget the L plates, male strippers and karaoke buses, the lastminute lovelies have settled on some options to impress the bride-to-be.
Rules for hens’ party success
Step 1 – Stick together: The hens’ team needs a base camp. Self-contained apartments in a central location to your festivities are perfect for a pre-main-event vino. Plus, having your bed for the night walking distance from the hens’ festivities is much more civilised than dealing with cab queues in the city. It’s also a good excuse to back up for a champagne breakfast the next day and debrief of the night that was.
Step 2 – Do something unique: Kick off the celebrations in the afternoon with an activity to bond women of all ages. Here are some ideas to suit every taste and budget:
Dress your best and book in for a high tea date
By Kirsty Harrison www.lastminute.com.au
In our opinion, afternoon tea is a seriously underrated activity, and we would relish the opportunity to spend time with our girlfriends drinking lady grey out of beautiful china and munching on scones with jam and cream. Or if tea is not your thing, why not swap your cup for a flute of bubbly and settle in for the long haul?
We love the Spoil Me Afternoon Tea in Melbourne; it includes a tension buster massage and an express manicure.
Become water babies
For something a little bit different, jump in the water and learn a new skill. Channel your inner surfer goddess, hire some boards and get involved in a stand up paddle boarding class. It’s inexpensive, fun, and good for you too! (If it’s good enough for Jennifer Aniston and Kate Hudson, it’s good enough for us).
Test your culinary capabilities
Cooking classes are a great opportunity to test your skills, expand your repertoire, and have a bit of fun with your girlfriends. Make the most of the teacher’s expertise and cook at your own pace – obviously you’ll need a free hand to hold your bubbly!
Step 3 – Say no to venue booking fees and avoid compulsory price tags: Following your afternoon activity, chances are you’ll be a little thirsty. Let’s face it though, weddings can be an expensive exercise for not only the bride and groom, but their guests.
Avoid sending a bill with the invitations (we all have enough these days), and opt for heading to a bar or club, staking out a spot and splitting the cost of food.
Everyone paying for their own drinks means no transferring of funds or chasing down people on the night (and zero chance of anyone resenting covering the cost of the cousin/aunty who has a few too many – there’s always one!)
