When we look back on the 20th century, nobody really pins the 90s as THE decade for fashion’s best innovations and trends. Most people, in fact, view it as ten years of regret, mood rings and badly shaped denim, and want to forget it as soon as possible.
But the age of Reality Bites, Clueless and The Spice Girls has returned – to fashion, at least. Inspirations from the decade that brought us Britney and grunge have been filtering down the runways for several years, but it was Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton’s collection of bedraggled-glam slip dresses a few years ago that really set the trend going. The virtue of hindsight? We’re no longer victims of trend-blindness, and can pick and choose our 90s inspirations as we like.
So if you prefer the 90s with a modern, elegant twist, this is the edit for you. No novelty chokers, inexplicably patterned harem trousers or Day-Glo here: we’ve picked the more timeless elements of the 90s look, from Drew Barrymore’s flower-power aesthetic to Courtney Love’s baby doll gone bad, and worked them into a wardrobe edit that looks ever so 2014. This is nostalgia as it should be.
