Denim days

Winter is still hanging in there as the spring collections start to fill stores—indeed, over the next two weeks both David Jones and Myer host their big season launches to get everybody excited about the coming season. One perfect transseasonal trend is denim—something many of us take for granted in the form of our favourite jeans to throw on when we can’t be bothered thinking of something more exciting to wear. Or maybe that’s just me.
Skinny jeans are still being slid into by those with the confidence to pull off the look. This season you might also look for cropped versions, with or without ankle zips, as per Manning Cartell’s offering. Another great style is the high-waisted, flared or wide-legged jeans, perfect for channelling that 1970s vibe, especially when worn with a peasant blouse and floppy hat. Very Jane Birkin. (Lover and Wrangler offer great examples.)
Ksubi has reintroduced its Kolors range of coloured denim, reigniting interest in this category—if you’re going to go there, look for super bright reds, greens and yellows to really make an impact. (Pink Zebra also has a good selection.) White jeans also look great come high summer, especially worn with colourful tops and stripes, and Mela Purdie has a good selection of these.
Denim also works well in the rest of your wardrobe. A denim dress can be a cute addition to your wardrobe. Simple styles such as this example from camilla and marc work best in this fabric, or button-though, belted versions as per the ’70s favourite (Levi’s do a great one). The latter look particularly chic while it’s still chilly when underpinned with a black poloneck and worn with boots. Morrison sent out baggy blazers and cut-offs at Fashion Week in May, for a casual tailored look. And remember, if double denim is currently acceptable, why not try triple? I dare you.

Danish beauties
Danish jewellery label Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen has announced Helena Christensen as the new face of the brand, which, as this photo can attest, is a rather appealing match. The jewellery brand has also launched its range of Lotus rings, which can be worn alone or in groupings or two or three. The colourful jube-like designs in different sizes are made with stones including tourmaline, moonstone, topaz and carnelian, while the metals include yellow or rose gold, silver and black silver. There are also matching earrings, pendants and colliers. A lovely way to add a little colour into your day. For more, see www.olelynggaard.com.

Cat lady
Heidi Klum shows us the way to do leopard print. It’s something I’ve said before, but something that can’t be overstated: if you’re going to do a whole dress in leopard (this one from Dolce & Gabbana), best it’s in a demure cut—not too low-cut, not too short, not too much flesh—lest it look a little, well, you know what I’m saying. The addition of a punched-eyelet belt makes the look a little more rock ’n roll, but the high neckline, longer sleeves and knee length make this dress a winner.
Delicate delight
And speaking of demure, Camilla Belle has nailed the ladylike look here with this floral Miu Miu dress. The gently puffed, longer sleeves bring just the slightest hint of volume to this elegant 1940s silhouette, and the subtle colours and print are divine. What makes the whole look even better are the slightly off-kilter accessories: while the satin clutch picks up on the print accent, it clashes slightly with the shoes, also from the label, whose chunky heels and round toe could be a little nanna if it weren’t for the sparkling finish. Gorgeous!
