Roped in
If you can’t actually be on the French Riviera this summer, at least your feet can pretend to be. Espadrilles are enjoying a moment in the sun, both in their casual, flat varieties and the dressier high-heeled espadrille wedge.
The tops are traditionally made of canvas—still usually the case for the flats—while the bottoms are made from rope. This is the defining feature—even with the more fashionable wedges, the sides of the wedge must be covered in this plaited rope finish, lest they be, quite simply, a plain, street-variety wedge. For flats, Soludos are the espadrilles of the moment (left, $36; 02 9360 9100), while Mymy (on mychameleon.com.au) are also quite traditional in look and feel. For heeled versions, Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo have great examples, while at a more purse-friendly price point, Sportsgirl and Lipstik have a great selection, as does Glassons (left, $49.95; glassons.com).
Antipodium
Sportsgirl launches its latest designer collaboration collection in September, this time with London-based Australians Antipodium. Designer Geoffrey J. Finch was in town recently to host a soirée in the lead-up, and the collection has some real pleasers in there. The wide-striped, long tube skirt (left), striped tee and oxblood hoodie all have the potential to become summer staples, while there are also a number of lightweight dresses on offer. And if you look very closely at the paisley print, Mr Finch’s face is hidden within. You can find them online at sportsgirl.com.au from Sept. 5, or in store from Sept. 12; prices range from $80-$150.
Zimmermann
Swimwear favourites Zimmermann have just launched a capsule high summer collection with US online giants Net-a-Porter. The six-piece collection features both bikinis and one-piece swimsuits and printed cotton dresses. “Net-a-Porter asked us to do a small swim capsule to drop at the height of the northern summer,” says designer Nicky Zimmermann. “We wanted the swimwear to be a little bit playful and quirky but still sexy. I’ve been dying to do a bold Hawaiian print in structured swim shapes for ages and this seemed like the perfect project for it.” Mission accomplished. See www.net-a-porter.com.
Mad for it
Fans of Mad Men in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne will be thrilled to hear that costumes from the hit show will be exhibited for the first time anywhere in the world. Emmy Award–winning costume designer on the series, Janie Bryant, has curated the exhibition, Icons of Style, which features early-1960s designs as worn by characters including Don Draper, Betty, Peggy and Joan. The exhibition runs from Sept. 5–Oct. 2 at both Sydney’s Chastwood Chase and Brisbane’s Queens Plaza shopping centres, and at Melbourne’s Chadstone from Sept. 8–Oct. 2. Hopefully there will be martinis close to hand.
Baby loves Missoni
Rescu. editor Bahar was a little excited to tell me recently that she had just taken possession of the first of the long-awaited Missoni Bugaboo prams in Australia. I had to break it to her very gently that my friend Catriona may have just pipped her to the pram, courtesy of a nationwide competition. Regardless of who had theirs first, here’s our two lovely ladies with their très chic bébés in Bugaboos.
