Hair highlights on RAFW Day 2 included Redken’s braids for Magdalena Velevska and a sexy textured look at Sara Phillips’ show, and we can’t forget L’oreal Professional’s gorgeous “bare angel’. See inside for plenty of pictures and how-to inspiration.
LOOK 1 created by Redken: Sara Phillips’ show
The look for Sara Phillips’ show “plays on a paradox between masculine and feminine,” said Redken’s Richard Kavanagh. “The look isn’t about girls trying to look like boys but a stronger masculine shape contrasted by soft feminine texture.”
How to get the look:
1. Section by section, dampen the hair with a handful of Redken Touch Control 05, milking the product through the roots, lengths and ends. Blow dry just using your hands to enhance the hair’s natural texture.
2. Once dry, follow with a light spray of Redken Style Connection Wool Shake 08. Gently brushing the product through with a soft bristle brush. This will help encourage a wool-like finish.
3. Section a large triangle at the top front of the head. Backcomb slightly at the hair line for height and then roll and gently push the quiff into shape. Pin into place.
4. Pull the side lengths and the hair ends from the triangle section to the crown. Fold and flatten and pin to secure, ensuring the hair stays flat to the head – similar to a flattened bun.
5. Finish with Redken Workforce 09 to hold style in place.
LOOK 2 created by Redken: Magdalena Velevska’s show
Braiding is another hair trend seen on the runway at RAFW with Todd Arndt, Redken Hair Director creating a stunning braided up style for this show.
“This look has a very understated 50s inspired sexiness to it. Even though it’s an up style, the look is still quite relaxed because the plait isn’t secured too tightly and the soft quiff gently falls over the forehead. This gives it a beautiful graceful and modern feel without looking too overdone,” says Todd.
How to get the look:
1. Coat dry hair with Redken Touch Control 05 for texture, grip and flexible hold.
2. Make a U-section with the top front section of hair. Create a pony tail at the top centre of the head and secure with a hair tie.
3. Plait the pony tail straight and secure at the end with a hair tie. Then tease the plait with fingers to create a ruffled texture and to slightly loosen -making it appear less like a regular plait.
4. Fold and twist the plait back and secure into a quiff shape with bobby pins.
5. Finish with Redken Workforce 09 to hold the up style in place and to smooth fly aways at the back.
LOOK 3: created by L’Oréal Professionnel: Sabatini White
Inspiration: “bare angel”
“The idea behind the hair is to keep it soft, fresh and feminine with an angelic-like quality. It’s important that the hair style complements the beauty of the clothes and acts as an extension to the entire collection,” says Luke Davis, a L’Oréal Professionnel Hair Director.
“The soft down style incorporates three textures; smooth and soft in the top lengths, melting curls in the middle lengths and brushed out ruffled ends.”
How to get the look:
1. Work a small amount of Texture Expert Gelée Cashmere into the palm of the hands and apply through the lengths of damp hair to thicken and add body.
2. Follow by double moussing the hair with Texture Expert Mousse Volupté for volume and hold.
3. Clean blow dry the hair with a perfect centre part.
4. Using curling tongs, start on the top layers of hair and curl sections only to eye level. Pin to scalp and allow to set. Repeat the process until all hair lengths are curled, pinning the curls in a brick formation.
5. Once cool, remove pins and brush out just at the ends.
6. For the last 10cm of hair at the bottom, tease lightly and kink with a crimper using a backcombing motion to create the ruffled ends.
7. Finish with Elnett Satin Strong Hold Hairspray to hold style in place.
