By Jenna BlackThe world’s most expensive Barbie ever to be created was revealed for the first time during Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, with the stunning back drop of Sydney harbour.
Fashion week not only brings countless runway shows to Sydney, it also brings other styling parties and post runway celebrations. Day 2 of RAFW saw a world first brought to our shores, with the Barbie Basics Launch party. The exclusive celebration was held in the Rosemount Bar at RAFW, and it was put on to unveil the world’s most expensive Barbie ever to be created, alongside the launch of the new Barbie Basics range.
Before guests arrived, the event organisers busily got working to create a Barbie heaven. A small stage was set up with a group of 12 beautiful Barbies, all in the dress code for the night, the little black dress. Other areas were set up around the bar with more stylish Barbies, and gift bags were brought out ready for excited guests.
As the launch filled up with the who’s who of the fashion industry and other Australian personalities like Rhonda Burchmore, who confessed to us she is a Barbie collector from way back, champagne and canapés were served and the party began. Each guest received a special Barbie gift bag, but were told they would be asked to use them later, at a surprise time of the night.
Early on, guests were asked to gather together for a speech by Stefano Canturi, one of Australia’s leading jewellers. Stefano explained to us that he was asked by Mattel to create the world’s most expensive Barbie, and when asked to, he went all out, seeking the world’s rarest diamond for her beautiful necklace. As Stefano explained, ‘basic does not mean boring, it means essential.‘ And with that, the world’s most expensive Barbie was revealed with the stunning backdrop of Sydney harbour behind her.
Stefano sourced an Australian pink diamond in square cut to create her must have necklace, costing the Barbie in excess of $AUD 600,000. After the Barbie was revealed, the real fun began, as guests were asked to be accompanied by a real life ken doll (there were several, and they were very popular amongst the women!). The Ken dolls would take you to one of the Barbie stands, where it was a free for all feast on Barbie accessories. You could choose from several heels, hand bags and jewellery for her, and even accessorise your personal Barbie with a Chihuahua dog, magazine or coffee. The Barbie Basics launch was a frivolous and glamorous night for all!
