Ultimate Guide To Oils For Your Skin and Hair

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Pinterest

We’re oil obsessed over here at Rescu. Whether our skin is going through a dry phase, trying to recover from a deeper treatment, or just not as glowy as it once was, finding the right oil is a game-changer.

Ready to find your own glow-getting oil? We spoke to Emma Hobson, education manager for the International Dermal Institute and Dermalogica to find out about which oils we should be looking for to care for our skin and hair, and we’re spilling all the details below.

Rosehip Oil: Rose Hip Oil helps to regenerate damaged skin tissues is due to its content of Trans-Retinoic Acids. Rosehip is a great skin hydrator, especially in winter, and is often used for reducing surgical and dermal scars, the elimination of certain hyperpigmented spots, and the lessening of wrinkles. Rosehip oil contains anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatories, essential fatty acids, and vitamins including Vitamin C (high) and A, Linoleic acid, Oleic acid, Linoleic acid Beta Carotene and Lycopene.

Jojoba Oil: This oil has high penetrating abilities therefore reducing water loss. The Jojoba plant produces a bean pod and it was discovered that heating the beans caused an oil to be secreted. The desert peoples of Southern California and Mexico had long been using this oil to treat skin conditions and cuts. It contains myristic acid which also has anti-inflammatory actions. Since it is similar in composition to the skin’s own oils, it is quickly absorbed and is excellent for dry and mature skins, as well as inflamed conditions. It’s also a great lash conditioner!

Sweet Almond Oil: This one is the most commonly used oils. It is a light oil that contains vitamins and minerals, proteins, and glucosides. Good for most skin types, and is especially useful for dry and itchy skin, plus has the benefit of being anti-inflammatory. Apply to dry hair before shampooing for silky hair, add a tablespoon to conditioners for a moisture boost, or massage into your scalp to help treat dandruff.

Wheat Germ Oil: This is an antioxidant that is high in Vitamin E, making it valuable in terms of delaying the signs of ageing.

Apricot Kernel Oil: Prevents evaporation of water from the skin, contains high levels of Vitamin E and A, and helps skin retain elasticity and suppleness. Rich in essential fatty acids like oleic and linoleic acid. Since it easily penetrates the skin, it is a good oil for prematurely aged, dry or irritated skin. The excellent softening and moisturizing properties makes it a great choice for face, hands, and hair. Can be used as an intensive overnight rehydrating face mask.

Avocado Oil: This oil has a heavy green colour as it still contains chlorophyll. It is a rich oil, that is deeply penetrating and rich in vitamins A,D, and E, lecithin, potassium. Used for people with dry or mature skin, or those suffering from eczema or psoriasis, is useful when treating environmental skin damage such as dehydration. Helps to regenerate the skin and soften the tissue. Ideal as a massage oil for all parts of the body, or an intensive overnight rehydrating face mask, or add a few drops to your bath for all-over moisturising.

Rice Bran Oil: The most nutrient-rich portion of rice. Contains numerous biologically active agents, including Phytic Acid, that aid in gentle microfoliation of the skin whilst controlling melanogenesis.

Olive Leaf Oil: A water-soluble extract, rich in antioxidant polyphenols that help fight free radical damage and control environmental aggressions. A rich source of Lactic Acid that aids in moisturisation and helps promote cell renewal in the upper layers of the skin (epidermis).

Argan Oil: Is rich in fatty acids and natural tocopherols which preserve cell integrity. It nourished the skin and restores the skin barrier. It penetrates into the hair pores or shafts and enhances the elasticity and hydration of hair. It also proves to be very nourishing for the growth of hair.
