Hair Director for Aveda, Darren Borthwick and team created smooth, lightly textured coifs with a look reminiscent of the undercuts and asymmetrical styles of the 90s at the Bassike Spring/Summer 2010 Rosemount Australian Fashion Week show in Sydney.
“The Bassike hair look for this season is an Asymmetrical bob with a fresher and younger feel. I did not want to create a typical look of ‘undone’ hair and I also wanted to show the detail of the clothing.” – Darren Borthwick for Aveda
Backstage Q&A with Bassike designers Deborah Sams and Mary-Lou Ryan
Q: What is the inspiration for your collection?
Bassike: We started looking at the Australian birds like the Galah & the finch to get our colour palette. We were so inspired by the way the colours naturally went together to form a beautiful palette. Being based at Palm Beach, we look over the ocean & are surrounded by amazing Australian trees, plants & greenery – these colours can also be seen in the collection. The lifestyle & environment where we live, translates into our relaxed tailoring which can be seen in the jersey trenches, stripe slouch pants & sleeveless jackets, in which we like to incorporate our organic jersey.”
Q: What is the look you are capturing?
Bassike: Relaxed, modern and uncomplicated chic
Q: You have made a real effort to green your show this season. How do you feel about this accomplishment?
Bassike: We feel that everyone needs to be socially responsible. It is our way of making a small contribution in an industry which leaves a massive carbon footprint.
Bassike so are proud to be partnering with a company like Aveda that promotes environmental awareness and responsibility.”- Bassike designers Deborah Sams and Mary-Lou Ryan
GET THE LOOK with AVEDA:
1. Prep hair with Aveda Volumizing Tonic which creates maximum volume on all hair types – but performs exceptionally well on fine hair with thickening results and blow-dry smooth with a flat brush.
2. Create a clean and deep left side part (leaving the top pinned loosely out of the way) and brush hair over to the right side wrapping around the head in a tight, low ponytail secured just behind the ear with a hair band. To create a slick, smooth look flat to the head, Aveda Pure-Formance Firm Hold Gel and Aveda’s new Control Force Hair Spray (launching 27 June) was used to hold hair in place.
3. Unpin the top section of hair and spritz Aveda Volumizing Tonic at the roots before blasting with a dryer.
4. Sprinkle Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion in sections at the roots and sparingly to the lengths to create texture with a manageable grip.
5. Brush hair smoothly but loosely over the right side of the face and wind into a loose roll covering the ear and concealing the ponytail. Gently shape the roll to follow the jaw line and finish lower at the nape of the neck and secure with bobby pins. Spray the finished style with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray for maximum hold.
