Lady Friday on Honeymoon Preparation

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Pinterest

It may be a honeymoon, a holiday away, or simply some time alone without the kids – but we’ve all had stretches in our lives where we know we’ll only get out of bed for the occasional shower and to find food.

However, to make marathon bed sessions the best possible, it can be helpful to do a little honeymoon preparation before you embark. And I’m not just talking about shaving down there and buying new underwear (though of course you can if you like).

Do your stretches and core exercises.

Being limber in bed is often all about practise and elongated muscles, rather than weird innate abilities to suddenly act like Russian gymnasts. Putting legs behind heads takes effort, though, so make sure your body is in its prime to do long work without suddenly seizing up.

Do classic yoga moves to loosen up your muscles, and incorporate some ballet conditioning to help your core, which is often a very integral part of the rhythm of sex.

An advantage? The endorphins will chill you out and make you more serene, taking the pressure off – stress has been shown to be a passion-killer, even when stranded on a gorgeous resort island.

Make sure you have lube.

This is often forgotten in the heat of the moment, or out of a sense of certainty that ‘you won’t need it’. I don’t care if you suddenly turn into Niagara at the first hint of foreplay: after a full day of bedroom fun you will need some help.

This is a chance to introduce some fun sensation play into your repertoire: investigate what lubes produce different feelings and bring them along for experimentation. Always do allergy tests on skin, by the way.

Get your nails in order.

This is very much a person-by-person requirement. If you’re dating a lady, by now you should hopefully know that the shorter the fingernails are, the better – prune, file, make it as smooth as possible.

If, however, you’re with somebody who appreciates scratching, now is the time to make sure your nails are long and healthy to aid this particular desire. Start gently if it’s unfamiliar, and always carry antiseptic if you’re prone to breaking skin (easier than most novices think).

Kegels, Kegels, Kegels.

The pelvic floor muscles really come into their own on long sex sessions. Strong ones can hold and pulse long after the rest of your body feels delightfully exhausted, so remember to work them out.

Ben Wa balls are not necessary – though they might be a fun accessory – but a session of quietly contracting them once every two seconds for several minutes a day will get them fighting fit.

Make sure you’re used to all your medications.

Have to start meds just before you go on holiday? Make sure you do it as far in advance as possible, to work out if there will be any nasties down below to sort out. Many a honeymoon has been slightly foiled by bad reactions to malaria medications or other problems.

Antibiotics can cause thrush, and introductions to new birth control are best done way before so you know what you’re dealing with. Also consult your doctor if you’re on the Pill and want to ‘skip’ a period for the sake of the holiday – for most women this is a very easy option, but it’s best to ask.

Test out new toys.

Nothing’s worse than getting to a remote location with a lovely and expensive new toy, only to discover that it needs batteries, a power socket different to the one in that particular country, or just isn’t what you wanted.

Even if it’s just on your own, if you’re purchasing new toys for a honeymoon or adventure (great idea!) make sure you’re familiar with how they work and what they need before you go, and pay attention to their hygiene too. Take special toy-cleaning liquid if possible.

All set! Now enjoy – and try not to ache too much on the way home…
