Lashes are always a huge topic when it comes to makeup! It is often said that many women would not leave the house without mascara and if they had to choose only one makeup item to keep if stranded on a desert island, it would be mascara.
Mascara can do so much to the overall makeup. It can open, widen and lengthen the eye as well add definition and give a feminine, flirty touch. It can also bring out your eye colour, especially when you have a light coloured eye, so yeah, it is an important part of makeup!
With a new mascara launching every week it seems these days, it is very hard to know what is the right mascara for you.
With Volume, Curl and Length being the main factor when it comes to differentiate mascaras, it is very important to know what your own lashes need, or what you want them to be.
When first meeting a client and we discuss lashes, I always look at the length of their lash side on. A lot of lashes have lighter coloured tips and you might not realize front on how long they might actually be.
I then look at the thickness of the lashes and how far separated they might be, as this can let me know how much volume may be needed. Everyone always says they want, longer, fuller lashes, but what you have naturally can determine if the mascara you choose is actually right for you.
A lot of women buy volume mascaras as they seem to be thicker and bolder, but often they can weigh longer lashes down or join longer lashes together, ruining an already good lash. I find the best mascaras are the ones that actually separate each lash as well as volume, this gives a nice fan effect, rather than clumpy.
MB PRO Tip; The wand of mascara can tell you automatically the end result.
If the wand/bristles are fat, short and far apart from each other, you will receive a very full, adding volume lash look. If the wand/bristles are closer together and are longer plus closer together, you are slimming out and lengthening each lash.
Then lastly, some mascara wands have either square cut bristles or different length edges to grab each wand for a tighter curl as you roll the wand through.
As mentioned earlier, your natural lashes play a BIG part in your total makeup looks end result.
Not all of us are blessed with long, thick lashes and we always go straight to our mascaras for help, but there are so many ways to help the problem while you sleep – double win!
My favorite lash serum, or ‘lash growth’ product as they are known in the industry is from Priori – Lash Recovery Serum! ($130 call 1800 808 993) It is amazing technology and it actually works – I should use some on my head!
Simply apply to lashes/lashline at night and within two weeks you should see visible results in general thickness of your lashes. Great if lashes have been damaged by applying extensions or just generally thin, weak lashes.
The way you apply your eyeliner can also determine your lashes end result.
If you are a thick eyeliner wearer or perhaps you like a smokey eye, you will not notice your lashes as much in terms of length.
This is because, if the mobile eyelid is covered with depth and shading, you loose the individual look of lashes. Creating a thicker eyeliner, or one that is smudged out to a smokey look is great for making the lash line more defined and looking fuller by defining the base, but as the depth is higher into the eye area, you loose focus on the length of each lash hair.
The best way to create longer lashes is to actually see them, so if creating an eyeliner look, make it very thin at the base, so each hair is really visible, therefore making them look longer.
Less eye shadow or lighter colours also achieve this. By wearing a smokey eye, this does not make your lashes smaller, but harder to see with the shading behind it, therefore looking full rather than long.
MB PRO TIP: Always use a lash curler for longer looking lashes!
This helps lashes bend upwards, allowing for tips of lashes to be more visible, especially when using a non-volume mascara, they will be at a higher point once curled. (Volume mascaras can heavy up and weigh down lashes, not allowing them to stand tall)
Now that we know to use a Curler, a lighter formula for no weighing down effect and get a wand with thinner, closer together, longer bristles, are lashes should be looking more stretched and noticeable.
I do love mascara that does a bit of both, as I love a fat base of a lash, but a nice combed, separated look – no clumping.
If your lashes are longer already, do not Zig Zag your wand through your lashes. All this does is sway your lashes side to side, allowing them to join up and clump.
I like to slowly apply mascara, the slower you go the more the wand can grip and comb through your lashes, giving the effect the mascara promises.
I like to almost blink onto the wand, so the pressure of your lash blinking, slowly combs through each bristle and then with my wrist twisting at the same time, your lash can get through a full circle of the wand.
One of the greatest mascaras for variety, a gal on the go and being cost effective is the Calvin Klein, ck one color Mascara! ($30 select Myer stores)
I love that with one twist at the base your can lengthen the wand for a thinner, longer lash look and great separation, then with another twist, shorten the wand for more volume.
I like to use the short first, fatten the lashes up, then twist to lengthen and separate on a second comb through – magic!
Now lastly, if you are going to fake it till you make it, don’t go too long! So many girls get lash extensions or use false lashes, but go two to three times more length than their own lashes – you want it to be realistic! It might look ok on a Saturday night, but when you have no eye makeup on, on a general day, these long spider legs can look strange!
