Dramatic hair colour stormed the runways at Australian Fashion Week and I’ve always been a firm believer that your hair speaks volumes as a fashion accessory, so with your winter wardrobe sorted, hair colour is next on my list. With a string of new at-home and innovative hair colour products hitting the shelves, knowing what colours to go for and how to maintain it may be the one thing holding you back from taking the plunge.
I chat to award winning hair duo Hooker & Young, Gary Hooker and Michael Young, for Matrix about the new hair colour trends for the 2013 season and how to always keep your hair up to silky, lustrous perfection.

RESCU: What are your colour trend predictions for autumn winter 2013?
Gary Hooker: My feeling for autumn and winter is that colours with be really bold, maybe with geometric panels of colour throughout.
Michael Young: I also think you’ll see a lot of pairing and contrasts of colours. Copper and violet tones with a splash of red are stunning and that against a silk black background creates a powerful vision, reflecting a sort of ‘Art of Asia’ oriental trend. Colour placement should be delicate and kept to a minimum for this winter. You need to allow the colour choices to make the impact – think emerald greens and rich reds for a splash.
RESCU: What’s your number one rule when going from dark hair to a lighter colour?
Hooker & Young: Condition! We would not recommend anyone attempt this if the condition of your hair is going to be compromised! Colour will only look as good as the condition your hair is in.
RESCU: What’s the best way to maintain vibrant, healthy hair colour?
Hooker & Young: Again, condition is key! If you have poorly conditioned hair, focus on rectifying this before applying any colour – make it part of your hair plan over a couple of weeks to fix any damaged hair before you put colour in. Only when their hair is in decent condition should you colour it, and then follow it up by using the right products that is, professional salon products. We would always recommend a weekly conditioning mask like Matrix Biolage Colorcare Masque and a heat protection spray like Matrix Design Pulse Iron In Thermal Styling Mist to keep the colour vibrant and the hair healthy.
RESCU: You’ve just launched your new hair colour system, COLORINSIDER. How is it different to what you’ve used before and does it deliver the colour spectrum you, as hair colour artists, would like to work with?
Hooker & Young: COLORINSIDER differs firstly because it is ammonia free and, being an oil driven system, it’s kinder to the hair and scalp. There is a fantastic depth of colour to the product and the new blonde and beige tones are stunning. It allows us to create colours that were impossible before and the new bold and plus shades means the opportunities are endless.
