To me, the right foundation is key to a successful makeup; The shade, texture and how it wears later in the day can really make or break your entire look.
I like skin to look realistic and natural – you wear foundation the foundation doesn’t wear you!
We have seen trends change of late, and matte finish was seen as ageing and dull once upon a time. Problem was that 90’s matte skin we used to love didn’t allow a realistic approach to skin. It had no light reflecting properties and therefore showed signs of ageing more than a light dewy finish.
Light reflecting and dewy foundation textures took over the market as it allowed skin to look like freshly cleansed, glowing skin, which added a transparent, more natural finish. This finish can create shine and not last the distance of an all day makeup look, meaning some had to add powder to set their look, which contradicted the results of a dewy finish.
I recommend looking for a foundation that can create an inner glow, yet delivering a very smooth, ‘satin’ like finish, giving great longevity throughout the day. The modern matte is a great way to not only look good upon initial application, but hours later with a lightweight, hydrating glow, giving a perfectly satin result!

When using any foundation it is vital to prep the skin correctly. A hydrating product that can be absorbed into the skin quickly is perfect to plump dehydrated skin. Then for extra prime, adding a glow before foundation application with a primer can give that extra boost the skin needs to wear a foundation naturally all day.
Light on the skin is what gives you that youthful appearance. Satin foundations create a glow for you, but don’t be tempted to go to dark when choosing a foundation shade – think clean and fresh, not dull and muddy!
Lastly, as always, don’t forget to only cover what is needed on the skin. If you don’t see it, don’t cover it: sweep foundation over the face to guarantee a thin finish, applying extra, in a dabbing technique, only on problem areas.
