International Women's Day – Events Around Australia

At RESCU, we are celebrating International Women’s Day (8th March), the global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. Find out what is going on around Australia and how our female counterparts are celebrating around the world. Happy IWD Day Everyone!

 

Since its birth in the socialist movement, International Women’s Day has grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration across developed and developing countries alike. For decades, IWD has grown from strength to strength annually. 

Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women’s craft markets, theatric performances, fashion parades and more!

It is even a national holiday in countries such as China, Russia, Nepal, Ukraine and Vietnam!

At Rescu. we think everyday should be IWD, So make a difference, think globally and act locally!! Do your bit to ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding.

Melbourne:

 HALF THE SKY
About: Benefit concert held to raise money to fund IWDA work with women across Asia and the Pacific. Featuring local artistes and comedians.

Organisation: International Women’s Development Agency: International Women’s Development Agency is the only Australian development organisation entirely focused on women’s rights and gender equality

Sydney:

Event: JOIN ME ON THE BRIDGE – SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE WALK
About: Walk across public pathway of Sydney Harbour Bridge led by African drummers and dancer. Part of worldwide ‘Join Me On The Bridge’ Campaign.

Organisation: Women for Women (www.womenforwomen.org): Women for Women supports women in war-torn regions with financial and emotional aid, job-skills training, rights education and small business assistance helping rebuild their lives.

Adelaide

Event: TRADITIONS, CULTURE AND INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT: CAN THEY WORK TOGETHER?
About: What happens when culture is invoked to oppose change? How do we best engage with communities in developing countries in a culturally sensitive manner when devising aid and development projects?

Organisation: One Just World: One Just World is a national series of free, after-work speakers’ forums aimed at involving the community in conversation and debate on key international development issues facing Australia, the Asia-Pacific and beyond. It is a partnership between World Vision Australia, the International Women’s Development Agency (IWDA), AusAID and a University in each state. From time to time we partner other NGOs and events such as CBM Australia, the Geography Teachers Association of Victoria and the Melbourne Writer’s Festival.

Brisbane:

Event: INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY FUN RUN
About: The annual Brisbane Road Runners Club International Women’s Day Fun Run/Walk (IWDFR) will be held in Brisbane on Sunday, 11th March 2012. Celebrating its 21st Anniversary, the IWDFR is one of the largest of its kind in Australia with over 7,000 participants expected in 2012.
Venue: Cultural Forecourt, The Parklands, South Bank, Brisbane, 4000
Organisation: Brisbane Road Runners Club: Owned and organised by Brisbane Road Runners Club (BRRC), a non-elitist community running club established since 1982, the event is about bringing together females of all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels for a morning of celebration to recognise International Women’s Day, fun & fitness and to raise awareness of women and women’s issues.

Canberra:

Organisation: UN Women Australia – Canberra Chapter: UN Women Australia is the National Committee for UN Women in Australia and is one of 18 National Committees globally. The National Committees support UN Women through membership programs, raising public awareness of gender and development issues and fundraising for UN Women projects around the world.

Darwin:

Event: WOMEN IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT & ENGINEERING
