Dubbed Hollywood’s Hottest Hairdresser, Ken Paves has tended to the tresses of stars such as Victoria Beckham, Jessica Simpson, Eva Longoria and Jennifer Lopez. We sit down to talk ‘crop’ with Hollywood’s mane man… By Katie Martlew
Besides his growing celebrity clientele, Ken’s stellar career has also seen him launch the successful clip in hair extensions range HairDo, appear on Oprah, and now, Ken’s just added another feather to his cap as official hairstylist of Winter Fairy Periwinkle, in Walt Disney Studios’ whimsical new CG-Animated feature film, Secret of the Wings.
We caught up with the oh-so-humble Mr Paves to chat about where he draws his inspiration from when creating red carpet hair looks, his favourite hair trends for Spring/Summer and his number one hair tip every woman must try to look and feel like an A-list celebrity…
RESCU: You designed Periwinkle’s hair in Tinkerbell and The Secret of the Wings. What was your inspiration behind the look?
Ken Paves: “The inspiration behind the look really was all the amazing work that the illustrators had done at Disney. Peggy Holmes, the Director originally came to me about this project, and went into detail about how she’s a Winter Fairy, where she lived, what her personality was like, and it all just came together. I think she looks like a very sass, fun fairy from the Winter Woods!”
RESCU: Short, pixie style crops such as Periwinkle’s have sparked a lot of a debate lately since Miley Cyrus chopped off her locks last week. What’s your take on the pixie cut trend?
Ken Paves: “With Periwinkle in particular I thought it was fantastic because short hair and the pixie cut is such a great trend, and a lot of young girls out there have that hair, so I thought it was amazing that Disney was willing to represent that look. I think it’s incredibly liberating, that we can give young girls different looks that represent different identities instead of trying to get people to look one way.”
RESCU: Victoria Beckham and Eva Longoria are part of your impressive A-list celeb clientele. Where do you draw your inspiration from when styling these lovely ladies for a red carpet event?
Ken Paves: “I draw my inspiration from the women themselves. I think my job in the service industry, is to help a women feel her best in the moment that she’s in, and I think everyday, every moment of a women’s life–she can feel a different way, or want to kind of celebrate a different side of her. Everything I do for all of my clients, and everybody I’ve ever worked for has been incredibly individual to not only to that woman but to that moment in her life.”
RESCU: What’s your number one hair tip that us mere mortals can try to make us look and feel like an A-list celebrity?
Ken Paves: “My number one tip is to understand and accept your hair texture and type, to not fight it so much, and to wear it with confidence. You know I’ve worked with everyone that I’ve ever wanted to work with, great stars like the ones you’ve mentioned, and Jessica Simpson, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, amazing, people throughout my career, and the one common thing that these women communicate that I think the world finds so attractive, and try to emulate–is confidence, the confidence to be themselves. So I always tell every woman: “Understand and accept whatever texture you have, work with it, make it its best, and be confident about it!”
RESCU: Spring is almost upon us here in Australia, what are your favourite hair trends for Spring/Summer?
Ken Paves: “My favourite trend for spring summer is an undone texture; in fact, I think Victoria Beckham is the greatest example of that look. She’s so put together and so chic, and her clothes are so refined and tailored, but then with her hair, there’s a really cool, undone aspect. So, hair with great layers and a lot of movement, whether it’s long or short. Perfectly imperfect hair is what Spring Summer and the months to come are all about. I think it’s all about hair being undone–nothing too stuffy, and not too much of a ‘do’.”
