It’s here again! Another Awards season and another round of starlets line up on the ruby rug. The Golden Globes are like the preliminary test match for the Oscars both in awards nods and designer duds. Last night’s show had a cavalcade of choices from full sleeves to fishtails- I took a tightly edited look at the gowns that made me gasp and those that made me groan….
The Best:
Naomi Watts (Zac Posen): WOW! Naomi certainly turned up the wattage this time around! Incredible colour, cut, keyhole detail and hair and make up- what an A-Lister…
Taylor Swift (Donna Karan): What a surprise- usually Taylor plays so safe this gown is a knock-out- the plum is bang on and she looks super sexy and confident- what a difference a bust-up makes!
Kate Hudson (Alexander McQueen): The more you look, the more you like. K-Hud is killing it in this McQueen number. The exquisite neckline and belt really offset the plain column gown- chic to a t!
Anne Hathaway (Chanel): Sleek, simple and sharp- Anne is the epitome of nonchalant elegance. It’s plain yes, but a gown this sublime doesn’r need any bells and whistles.
Claire Danes (Versace): Versace red-wrapped perfection. The fit is fantastic and her choice of hair is perfect for this wrap style. Sexy but not OTT.
Helen Mirren (Badgley Mischka): Three words- Stone. Cold. Fox.
Amy Adams (Marchesa): Oh, what a fairytale! Sometimes these gowns have been done to death but this is blushy, frothy and fishtailed and I love it- completely compliments her complexion too- sigh…
Sofia Vergara: Sometimes Sofia gets overlooked as a mere sex-bomb but I’m sorry…What is NOT to like about her! She looks like a liquid licorice stick and her figure is totally incredible…
Nicole Ritchie (Naeem Khan): THIS is how to wear all over lace (Jennifer Lopez please take notes) a little unexpected and not for everyone but that’s why Nicole nails it for me- the 70’s do and blue eyeshadow play together beautifully with her choice of gown.
Lucy Liu (Carolina Herrera): Yep, that’s right- a doona can be fashionable! This is a divided subject among my friends but I couldn’t take my eyes of Lucy on the ruby rug- FloraBunda! I loved her fishbraid plait too… OR…
Nicole Kidman (Alexander McQueen): She’s back! Such a slick choice from Nicole. McQueen knows a cut and Nicole oozes sophisticated style in this column- LOVE…
The Worst:
Amanda Seyfried (Givenchy): So close but yet so so far. Amanda is such a beauty but this gown swamps her and makes her look much older than her years.
Jennifer Lopez (Zuhair Murad): I know what Jenny was trying to do but as usual Ms Lopez always goes OTT. It is beautifully constructed but way too much. If this was sleeveless it would have been much more comtemporary…a little bridal for my liking (and Jennifer we know how much you like a wedding!)
Amy Poehler (Stella McCartney): A crowd favourite I know, but this isn’t right for these awards. Amy is so teeny that a tux with this cut shortens her frame. This is much more suited to a taller girl.
Siena Miller (Erdem): Another great idea poorly executed. I love the 60’s vibe and dimensional detailing but it misses the mark for me. This would be much more suited to Michelle Williams- Am I right???
Eva Longoria (Pucci): Another gown for the more height- blessed starlets. The thigh high split was an ingenius way to give Eva a longer frame but it falls short (excuse the pun!) for me…Eva looks better in bold.
Julia Louis Dreyfus (Vera Wang): Tu-Tu much! Julia always chooses a little off-centre but the fabric and cut swamps her. I would have also preferred a little bling!
Mayim Bialik: This bejewelled chiffon gown is too old for Mayim, and too long. There is a difference between a train that gracefully grazes the carpet and gown that needs an inch or two off the hem…
Debra Messing (Donna Karan): Curtains up! This gown unfortunately looks like those Roman Blinds that fold when you pull the cord- Debra should have pulled the plug on this messy confection. A Sleeker choice would have suited her better…
Halle Berry (Atelier Versace): Woah! Halle is still hot to trot with that bod but this is neither the time or the place to recreate your “Bond” moment… Sometimes Halle suffers from the Heidi Klum Syndrome; too much all at once – leave us a little to the imagination!
Lena Dunham (Zac Posen): I know, I know she is a comic and satirical genius and Zac knows a frock, but the combination is a little disappointing for me- it has everything going for it but manages to make Lena look really uncomfortable. Not to mention she cannot walk in heels- Red Carpet 101 Lena!!!
