On mother’s day we remember just how much we love our mums, but mother/daughter relationships aren’t always easy to navigate. That said, starlets Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn seem to have the relationship of dreams, always supporting each other and laughing their way through hollywood in style.
Last year, Rescu. caught up with Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn to discuss their beauty secrets, mother/daughter relationship, and latest projects. Read the highlights of our interview below, as the iconic duo share their secrets to a positive mother/daughter bond.
RESCU: Many of our readers are mothers, do you have any advice for staying close to your daughter through all the life stages – teens, adulthood, motherhood…?
Goldie Hawn: These are very easy things to say, you know, ‘stay close to your teen’ or make sure that you get on together but these are all ideas — you really have to put the work in.
That’s the work that you have to [put in] in the beginning and that’s how you develop a relationship. It isn’t just because you want to… it’s also because you act on it and you work toward it.
So, I would say for most women, the best thing to do in order to have a fulfilling relationship is to start when you have your child [and act] with the intention that you’re going to go through all the stages with your child and be as present as you can be.
But also, looking at that person as an individual and guiding them to be their highest, best self… You’re developing as your child is developing and you realise that you’re not perfect and you can’t instil upon your child anything that you don’t already know. So you have to learn a lot about yourself.
So, when you say what is about having a child, or when they go through their teens or whatever — it’s great to be present but you have to be present from the beginning. I think that’s a better way of doing it.
RESCU: What’s one thing about one another that you really admire?
Goldie Hawn: I admire Kate’s sense of privacy, her straight-forwardness and her fearlessness.
Kate Hudson: I admire my mother’s compassion, her strong sense of spirituality, her enormous capacity to love, and her work ethic as a real pioneering woman in our industry, you know being a director and an actor, being really the first woman to do that and to be able to maintain a strong sense of her family and presence in her family. Those are the things that come off the top off my head — I could keep going!
RESCU: How do you think the environment that you grow up in is reflected in your parenting style?
Kate Hudson: I think it’s different for everybody. I was lucky to have been given an environment that I would like to emulate and have been raised in an environment that I would like to emulate. And obviously as you become an adult you create your own life and your own ideas but I had a really wonderful childhood where the focus was mainly about each other’s wellbeing and being honest and being kind.
I think that as you learn more about yourself when you become a parent, you realise that the only true legacy you leave behind is your children and that, as my mum would say, if there’s one thing she won’t fail at it’s raising her children. I think that not by just the words but by the actions of what that meant for us growing up — that is what me and my brother are very focused on as well.
You are what you know and some people have to break away from that and create a new way of thinking and then some people do want to emulate what it is that they’ve learnt and know and that’s sort of where I’ve been lucky enough to sit in.
RESCU: Our readers want to know if you would ever consider doing a movie together?
Kate Hudson: We’ve thought about it. It’s something that we talk about sometimes and we sort of have moments where we’ve really looked into it. Working together is so much fun for us.
I think where I’m really enjoying working with my mom right now is in one main focuses in her life is which is her foundation MindUp.
That’s a place where I’ve really enjoyed that an experience of working towards something that is really making a difference.
In terms of movies — we would have so much fun doing it, it would be such a blast — but it would have to be the right movie and the right vibe and hopefully it will happen! I look forward to that.
