The 2012 American Billboard Awards were another testament to the leading ladies in the music industry, with Adele, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift taking out the top honours. And what would an award show be without a bit of lip syncing controversy- ahem, Chris Brown?
The three hour spectacle that was the 2012 Billboard Awards only handed out a handful of awards at the ceremony. Adele cleaned up at yet another music awards show walking away with a whopping twelve awards while dance duo LMFAO walked away with six.
A lot of milestones were honoured and recognised on the night, such as for Katy Perry who joined the ranks of music legends like Michael Jackson by winning the night’s prestigious Spotlight Award. She’s the only female artist in history to achieve five No. 1s from one album, so she definitely deserved it. She thanked her grandma, who was her date for the evening, when accepting the award.
Not to be outdone, Justin Bieber won the award for Social Artist thanking his internet followers for giving him his start.
Country crooner and queen of the charts, Taylor Swift, having had three consecutive number one albums, was honoured with Woman of the Year for a second year in a row. “I’m so humbled and honoured by this” she said.
The controversial Chris Brown, managed to beat out Beyonce and ex-girlfriend, Rihanna for Top R&B Artist but was caught out lip syncing during his live performance of ‘Turn Up the Music’. Pop star Pink tweeted, “One day if i lipsync i hope i do it as well as him…” during Brown’s performance.
Stevie Wonder was awarded with the Billboard Music Icon Award and Whitney Houston was chosen for the with the Millennium Award. Her daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown and sister-in-law Pat Houston accepted the prize on her behalf. “I just want to say thank you to everyone who supported us through it all – not just from when it was good, but when it was bad – just everything. Thank you so much for showing that much love, ‘cos she deserved it,” Bobbi said. “I’m just blessed to have been in such an incredible woman’s life. There will never be another one, ever, and I thank you – all of you, fans, everyone. Thank you so much.”
