Kirrily Johnston takes us on a journey back in time with her latest collection Cave Dwellers. We look into the past achievements of this successful designer.
Background and History
Since designer Kirrily Johnston launched her namesake label in 2004/2005, it has achieved immense success within Australia and on an international scale. The label’s loyal following adore the quality fabrics, attention to detail and the slick forward edge that each collection produces. With formal training at the Melbourne Institute of Textiles, Kirrily Johnston used this as a platform to launch her label, which saw her quickly open her first store in Sydney, June 2005, where the designer is now based.
Style and Philosophy
The Kirrily Johnston aesthetic is modern and sexy; floating in between feminine silhouettes and a more androgynous appeal. The label plays largely with layered fabric and fine detail that unite to create fashionable yet comfortable designs.
In 2009 the label took a new direction, much to the pleasure of many critics in the industry, with the production of a unisex collection. This new approach aimed to appeal to a broader audience, which saw Kirrily launch her new concept at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week 2009. On the influences behind the collection, titled Synchronicity, Kirrily explained that it was “based around the concept of time and things coming together; primarily men and women.” Taking direct reference from vintage clocks, whilst playing with a strong colour palette of nudes and burnt orange, Synchronicity quickly became a hit collection from RAFW 2009.
Being one of the first to tap into a new market of fashion forward unisex designs, Synchronicity took off with popular styles including drop pants, loose fitted knits and layered vests. Heading into A/W 2010, the designer maintains her unisex appeal with her latest collection Cave Dwellers. Her innovative style is directly represented in this collection as she plays with the concept of an imaginary couple, who represent an underground world of primitive living.
Her second unisex collection turns towards a more natural palette of ochre and moss green, contrasting luxurious fabrics such as fine jersey and soft leather. Again, a staple aesthetic of layered fabrics and strong textures resonate throughout the collection, with an unexpected touch of sequin glamour added, to make Cave Dwellers a collection that appeals to all styles.
Rosemount Australian Fashion Week
With a strong celebrity following, including Australian icons Megan Gale and Nicole Kidman, as well as many international stars like the ever stylish Kate Hudson, we can expect to see even greater things from Kirrily Johnston at this years’ Rosemount Australian Fashion Week 2010. Kirrily has long been a favourite amongst the worlds’ most influential fashion editors, yet she never ceases to amaze us with her truly innovative designs. Kirrily Johnston will be showing at RAFW on Thursday 6th May 2010.
