A friend of mine leaned over the table last night – we were eating at a Chinese restaurant and cackling hysterically – and said, “My future career is ruined.”
“Oh, Christ, what did you do?”
“Nothing! Nothing. It’s just that. Um, I think I’m going to end up on one of those naked ex-girlfriend sites on the Internet. Stop looking at me like that.”
The facts eventually came out. She has a particularly aggravating on-and-off boyfriend/bedroom buddy/antagonist (I could do eighteen columns on him!). And once, long ago, when they were young and stupid, she allowed him to take photos of her. Said photos were not, let us say, of her sitting with her legs neatly crossed, primly holding a Bible.
Thing is now the on-off relationship is in an “off” stage, and a very unpleasant and possibly permanent one. She wants to tell him off for all the horrid things he’s done – but she’s worried that if she gets on his bad side, the Internet will get more than it bargained for.
Nice piece of work, isn’t he? Ladies, seriously, why do we do this? Have we learnt nothing from the countless celebrity and business scandals where sexual indiscretions were revealed to the entire planet? (i.e. Paris Hilton’s sex tape). Has our sense of decorum not caught up with the digital age?
Although, I’m not in the right position to be scolding. To be honest, if a partner whom I trusted praised my glorious beauty and smoldering sexiness to the skies and wheedled enough, I might have my nakedness put on record too, for his private delectation. Hell, being photographed naked is a step many women take on their own. It’s empowering, to embrace your sensuality and have it immortalised; several friends who got through college by life modelling can attest to that.
Still, the request itself should be enough to send up alarm bells. Yes, you’re undoubtedly the hottest thing that’s ever walked into his bedroom, but why does he need to record it? Are you so sure he’s not going to use them to show his mates at work? Or (as in a particularly horrible episode of Skins) use them to embarrass you or your associates in public? Does he have a collection to boost his little ego? Is it ‘art’? (THAT one is just suspicious.)
My friend, however, is safe from future employers’ wrath (or wolf-whistles), since it appears none of the photos involve her face… But there are plenty of women out there, though, who are kicking themselves for being sweet-talked into private time with a camera. Even if nothing comes of it, they’re living a life of perpetual night terrors, fearing their time in the spotlight in a dirty little corner of the world wide web.
