Here are RESCU’s top tips for making the fantasy reality, no slip-ups involved.
1. Protection
If you’re not on the pill or haven’t been checked for STDs, a condom is still your best bet. The bad news? Condoms and showers don’t get on very well. The water washes away spermicides, and without lubricant (which tends to get washed away too) the condom is more likely to split or break.
Besides, if you use soaps or body oils, they have a nasty tendency to degrade the materials of condoms, aggravatingly enough. Experts tend to recommend that if you aren’t protected by other means, a condom in the shower is a risky bet. (And the same, unfortunately, applies to dental dams.)
2. Lubrication
Unfortunately, both still and running water tend to wash off natural and unnatural lubrications, meaning that your dream of a silky smooth shower scene is probably going to be pretty friction-ridden in real life.
As any sexually active woman knows, sex without lubrication is difficult for everybody involved, even if it involves toys.
A possible option? Keep the shower for foreplay, and wait until you’re out for penetration – or stick solely to digits until you’re dry again. If that doesn’t appeal, try silicon-based lubricants which state they won’t harm latex or break down in water – Wet Platinum is one option. (A tip: keep spare used towels handy for wiping off silicon lube. The expensive embroidered ones you grab in a panic will not thank you.)
3. Positions
In a small shower? Brace yourself against the walls or in a corner, and be lifted up by your waist. Or, if you’re of compatible heights, just loop your leg around your partner’s hips and hold on tight.
If it’s a tub, just have sex sitting down! Save the acrobatics and your leg strength.
Make sure nobody’s head is facing directly into the jetstream, and that you won’t clutch at the hot tap in your ecstasy and scald your intimate bits (not fun).
Slightly more room in the cubicle? Doggy-style is effective too. If you’re flexible, lean over and put your hands on the floor rather than against the wall, for deeper penetration.
Check all parties have no soap, shampoo or potentially stinging/nasty suds on their bodies once you get started, or things could get uncomfortable quickly. Hey, rinsing each other off is fun.
4. Toys
Most toys these days are water-friendly, but check before you bring electronics into the shower – just in case!
Waterproof vibrators and massagers are among the most popular shower toys, but there’s a whole world out there, from waterproof harnesses to suction handles for extra help in positioning. Experiment away.
Plus, remember that you have a natural toy at hand with the shower head, which hopefully has a pulse setting. (And afterwards, remember – just because you’re in a shower doesn’t mean your toys are automatically clean, so scrub ’em up!)
