Ladylike vintage glamour at Marnie Skillings at RAFW

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Pinterest

Romantic and retro prints were a highlight of Marnie Skillings’ RAFW show, held at Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens. The make-up by MAC and hair by GHD were also ultra-sophisticated.

As the models floated by in soft colours – some adorned by whimsical hats – we couldn’t help but admire the hair: a vintage-style half-quiff.

The make-up was a cross between luminous ‘English rose’ and ‘modern miss’; with bright shades of orange and fuchsia on the lips.

The Hair Report:

Sophie Roberts, ghd’s Hair Director said, “the hair was inspired by the Teddy Girls hair of the 1950s. Part Edwardian, and part quiffed, this look is a modern girl’s take on a vintage style. Romantic, and a touch tomboy.”

“What is exciting about hair in fashion at the moment is finding ways to modernise a retro or vintage look.”

How to recreate the look:

1. Build the texture with ghd Maximum Mousse and ghd Sea Spray for volume and hold, by applying liberally and blow drying in roughly with your hands for a slightly dishevelled finish.

2. Roughly part hair to one side and then divide hair into two sections from crown to nape.

3. Smooth and wave hair in rough sections with the ghd Styler if your hair needs added body or texture or to tame a frizzy hairline.

4. Twist or braid each section starting behind the ears, at the hairline, one side at a time and band the hair at the ends so you have two plaits on either side.

5. Knot the braids together and roll up towards the head and pin at the nape.

6. Blowdry hair at front into a quiff, by lifting with fingers and securing with ghd Ultimate Hairspray.

7. Finish by pulling out any loose strands around the face or at nape for a worn- in finish.
