From the more sculpted shapes of pin curled “faux bobs” through to softer more feminine shapes such as the low chignon bun with loosely pinned curls, Boardwalk Empire’s Margaret Thompson has delivered the hairspiration in spades. We asked hairstylist Patrick Casey from Cleveland’s Salon & Café to teach us how to get the 1920s look. Get Margaret Thompson’s low chignon bun in five simple steps.
Step One: Preparation is always the key to any lasting hairstyle and this will depend largely on your hair-type and and texture, though as fortune would have it this is a perfect style to achieve with “day after curls” if you still have some waves in your hair from previous styling, if so go straight to step 3. Though I would typically use a mousse.

Step Two: Wave in the hair is paramount to this style and in order to achieve this. Loosely tong hair throughout in even inch-by-inch sections working horizontally up the head. Allow to cool.
Step Three: Section from the crown to top of ears and pull back section into a low ponytail (ensure that it isnt too tight to maintain the soft aesthetic) to desired side with hair elastic. At the end of the ponytail wrap another elastic securing the ends and gently wrap ponytail around the base, pinning to the scalp as you go.
Step Four: With a bristle brush or comb, gently brush out the hair either side of desired part and then using vertical sections approx 1 inch in thickness use bobby pins to pin hair coming away from the face. Leave the front sections on either side of the face to tuck behind the ears further enhancing the loose effect.
Step Five: To finish, spray all over with a flexible hold hair spray.
