Lui Hon is an emerging label with big hopes to reach an international audience. His debut collection at RAFW, featured the key upcoming trends of draping and sheer materials, finished off in a wearable and lust worthy collection.
Malaysian born designer Lui Hon showcased his talent at Day 4 of RAFW, with his collection ‘So the wind won’t blow it away’. With figures like stylish SBS news reader Lee Ling Chin attending, the collection was expected to impress with its men’s and women’s wear. Lui Hon took a unique approach to the collection with Arabian themes shown through draping and heavy layering in nudes, stone and gold.
As a relatively new designer, having come from the show Project Runway, and establishing his label in January 2009, the exquisite tailoring and concept behind his label was a show stopper. As many designers have been doing recently, Lui played with elongated cuts, bringing tails to the back of white singlet style dresses, and draping skirts. Women wore sheer nude singlets with shimmering glitter detail finished with leather strapping around the waist or hanging delicately on the side.
Draped stone coloured t-shirts with leather strap detail were paired with drop crotch white pants for the men, whilst others wore casual black cotton pants, all with desert inspired leather sandals. The men’s wear played more with layering than the women’s, as hooded long tops were paired with draped jersey pants, featuring billowing side draping.
Splashes of gold sequins livened up the neutral palette, shown in a nude and sequinned contrasting cape and through two tone vests. Women wore Grecian inspired white dresses, with a mix of draping leather and sheer. A dusted blue draped top was tucked into a stunning crisp white skirt in a floating pixie cut. The beauty of the collection remained in the fluid movement that each piece had; they literally floated down the runway in sheer draped material, and elongated lines.
Lui Hon’s collection is expected to sky-rocket him into the spot light of the fashion industry, and we can envision this young label heading internationally with its worldly influences and must-have designs.
Australian beauty brand Jurlique partnered with Lui Hon by giving all front row guests gift bags containing their Australian Jasmine hand cream. The delicate alluring scent of Australian Jasmine in Jurlique’s celebrated Jasmine Collection beautifully complemented the collection of softly draped silks, inspired by the fluid effects of wind in a tonal palette of cream, nude, grey and black.
