The designer stalwarts shone as expected, but this season saw a whole new guard of designers angling for the spotlight – wardrobe, take note. Georgia Alice
The latest cool kid on the block? Meet Georgia Currie, the namesake behind Georgia Alice – she of the ruffled off-the-shoulder silk top that spawned a million imitations. Hype around Currie as our ‘new Ellery’ this MBFWA was rife (particularly given that Ellery herself is no longer showing locally, having cemented herself within the European season), given her similarly sophisticated take on layered tailoring – her unique approach to championing the offbeat (think exaggerated cuffs, dresses over pants) shuns all the rules. Our tip: invest in her shirting before it breaks the internet.

Macgraw
Sister duo Beth and Tess Macgraw bring a little saccharine-sweet lightness in amongst what is normally a very serious affair – and this upbeat attitude is proving wildly successful, having recently nabbed the $100,000 National Designer Award at this year’s Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival. Unashamedly feminine with just the right amount of spunk, Macgraw’s muse gilds herself in silks, lace, velvets and all things tactile – run to them when a great personality plus dress is in order.

Albus Lumen
Designer Marina Afonina is innately well versed in the little details that take a label from solely wearable to covetable – her years working as a stylist (Lara Worthington’s long-time image maker, who naturally fronts the latest Albus Lumen campaign) trickle through within the brand’s understated, effortless take on resort wear. Refreshingly all-inclusive when it comes to silhouettes, we’re warning you now – it’s designed to work for every woman, so throw any idea of investing in anything less than a handful of pieces out the window. Think all the splendour of Celine minus the price tag.

P.JAMÉ
Fashion loves a re-work – particularly when you have a power couple like Dan Single (ex-Ksubi designer) and Bambi Northwood-Blyth (his model wife) at the reigns. Since active wear has now settled comfortably into our sartorial vocab, naturally we’re progressing onto the next niche: sleepwear. ‘Bed life’ is a thing, and trust these two to be ahead of the curve – if you spend a third of your life sleeping, looking good doing so can’t hurt. Compiled of soft jersey pieces, the collection takes on two alternate personalities: a brash, outlandish range of singlets and shorts in bright prints, alongside a slightly more romantic crew of silk rompers and slinkier pieces. #Snoozequeen indeed.
Misha Collection
Truthfully, it’s not a stretch to make Bella Hadid look incredible – but by god, Australian label Misha Collection made a smart move booking those legs for their runway show this week. There’s only so much that figure can do on it’s own, however, and the collection more than did itself justice – a sleek, sexy, powerful presentation of after-dark pieces in nudes, soft golds and blacks with a little urban vibe creeping in throughout the silhouettes. If head-turner is your brief, look no further – every piece is a sure-fire knockout.
