Ahhhh… now you’re talking my language. My penchant for all things sparkly is well documented and I have been referred to as “the King of Bling” on more than one occasion. And with good cause. I adore all that glitters, even if it’s not gold. It could be silver, bronze, copper, rose, champagne, steel or mirrored, beaded, embellished or sequinned. So you can imagine how thrilled I am about the current trend towards metallics!
But steady on, my shimmer fiends … the new metallics this season retain a cool and sophisticated air, rather than a garish ode to Joan Collins’ Dynasty days. Whether you love metallic threads woven into the softest sheer fabric or prefer the metal hardware features or embellishments, this shiny stuff does come with a warning note attached.
So here are my tips on which pieces to invest in, how best to wear it and how to glimmer with style – without looking like a disco ball wrapped in alfoil.
1. Put the sequinned evening party frocks on ice till … err, evening
Save the head to toe liquid lurex maxi dress and all over embellishment “chandelier effect” for a red carpet statement. Then – and only then, on the red carpet – do you have licence to give your inner modern-day Joan full reign.
2. Yes, you can wear metallics during the day
… just be sure not to overdo it (cue the alfoil covered mirror ball effect). Metallic leather works best during the day on shoes, handbags, belts or cropped jackets. Ditto for metal jewellery in gold, silver or bronze.
3. Invest in bold statement pieces
Such as an amazing embellished top, full metal mini skirt or mini dress, leather biker jacket or a lurex thread trench coat. But if you can’t quite get your head around a garment made entirely from metallic finishes, then opt for a soft piece featuring more subtle embellishment, trims or hardware.
4. Choose a metallic shade that compliments your skin tone
Yellow based complexions should steer away from yellow based gold or brassy hues, and instead look for metallics with a pinky undertone, such as warm rose golds, creamy champagne golds or earthy rusty bronzes and coppers. Vice-versa for pink based skin. If you have Olive skin, lucky you – most metallics agree with you. Blue based steel grey metallics and silvers look great on ice cool blondes or redheads.
5. Update your existing wardrobe by accessorising with anything metallic
… shoes and handbags in the softest metallic leathers or chunky metal belt buckles. Bold metal ornamental jewellery is the must have of the season – toughen up delicate ruffled blouses and frocks with chunky metal chains, massive metal fish scale disc earrings and luxe mirrored bangles and cuffs. Metallic accessories are a great investment that will last across several seasons to come.
6. Neutral toned outfits are a perfect canvas to showcase metallic adornments
All white outfits are chic and crisp with champagne or yellow gold jewellery and accessories. All black ensembles tick instant glamour when teamed with gunmetal, liquid silver or glass features. Wear beige and tan with warm rose gold, bronze or copper bling.
7. Channel your inner iron maiden with new season cosmetics
Immerse a pedicured toe in “Shimmering Shamrock” nail varnish, dust a little “Molten Glass” eye shadow or gloss up your pout with “Fools Gold” for a true taste of mercurial magic.
Okay, glimmering goddesses, now you are set to shine. Hand back Joan Collins her gaudy roll of alfoil, and enjoy your time basking in the soft twinkling reflected light.
