Get 17th Century hair inspired by the romantic heroines of Rubens from Vivienne Westwood’s A/W 12 Paris show and see all the behind-the-scenes action with supermodel Joan Smalls from the Anthony Vaccarello A/W 12 show!
The hair look at the Vivienne Westwood A/W 12 show was inspired by the romantic heroines of Rubens. The collection itself was full of historical references, the clothes resembling costumes suitable for a 17thcentury theatre production; with a twist of modernity provided by the inclusion of iridescent reflective materials.
“I wanted to create a hair look that was both reminiscent of the past but at the same time extremely modern” said Sam McKnight, hair stylist for the show. Texture plays a key role in this hair look, a textured effect that has a ‘lived in’ quality to it that contrasts against the fluidity of the soft makeup look.
Get the Look:
1. Always start with freshly washed and conditioned hair to provide the perfect base for this look.
2. Apply a moderate amount of hair mousse through the hair with your hands and then run each section through from root to end with a wide tooth comb.
3. Roughly blowdry the hair using your hands to break the hair up and create a natural finish.
4. Next, brush through the hair with a wide soft bristle brush to loosen the curls and create a wave effect. Spray the hair all over with hairspray to add further texture and give the hair some ‘bite’.
5. Take a small section of hair from either side of an imagined centre part, twist them over each other and pull down to the opposite side, then take an equal small section of hair from the front of the head from further down the head in line with the lower temple and twist the hair pieces together and then bring each side together at the back of the head and secure with elastic. (this creates a natural hair band which helps to anchor the style in place)
6. Take the section of loose hair at the back of the head and tie with elastic a short way up from the bottom of the hair to create a very loose pony tail. Roll the tail up and tuck the tail of the ponytail under the natural hair band and pull through to create a looped roll of hair.
7. Pull random pieces of hair out of the loop to emphasise the texture and create an ‘undone’ finish. Spray with hairspray to set the style in place.

Parisian Beauty at Anthony Vaccarello A/W 2012 MFW
At the Anthony Vaccarello Fall 2012 show, model of the moment and face of Estee Lauder, Joan Smalls, led a flock of mysterious, Parisian style beauties down the runway. Glossy, burgundy-black eyes, nude lips, contoured cheeks and green-black nails ruled the catwalk throughout the show.
“Anthony’s collection is magical – very sexy, very luxurious, very fresh, very young. All of those elements combined inspired me to create a ‘Paris by night’ look, with the focus on the eyes. For me, the eyes represent the Parisian woman, it’s her signature. Anthony is a young designer, and it is important to keep the makeup young and fresh.” – Tom Pecheux Makeup Director of the show said.
