Whitney Houston, the winner of 30 Billboard Awards, 22 American Music Awards, two Emmy Awards, and six Grammys, was and is one of the most celebrated female entertainers of all time. She reigned as pop queen for many years and was one of the top selling pop artists in music history.
At her peak, Houston was the golden girl of the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world’s best-selling artists.
She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful, and incomparable vocals that had a gospel style but was transcended to the masses with a pop edge. Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like ‘The Bodyguard’ and ‘Waiting to Exhale’.
It is no wonder Whitney was such a legendary singer, she was the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston, the cousin of 1960s pop diva Dionne Warwick and the goddaughter of Aretha Franklin.
Houston was one of the top-selling artists in pop music history, with more than 55 million records sold in the United States alone.
A number of Houston’s colleagues have already expressed their devastation at her passing.
Mariah Carey: “Heartbroken and in tears over the shocking death of my friend, the incomparable Ms. Whitney Houston. My heartfelt condolences to Whitney’s family and to all her millions of fans throughout the world. She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth.”
