Nicole Richie
Pastel perfection… Not an easy shade to pull off but the ice blue shadow absolutely works here. I quite love that she’s gone for a direct shadow match to her gown. So daring and so modern! All anchored nicely by a fab lash, Nicole has complemented her metallic eyes well with a soft, matte lip and a peach cheek. Probably not appropriate for everyday wear, but if you’re trying this at home, keep the colour along the lash line and only as far as the socket of the eye. Any closer to the brow and you hit 80’s territory! And do as Nicole has done: keep the lip neutral and matte, the brows soft and not overly defined, and the contours light.
Jessica Alba
Jessica’s look ticked so many red carpet beauty boxes: a fab bold lip, smoky eye, great lash, defined brow but despite this combination, she’s not even close to being OTT. She’s generally consistently polished, but this is the best I’ve seen in some time. She just oozes glamour… A dream in Tangerine! It’s quite refreshing to see her skin a little more matte than usual – and ensures her lips are the standout. I would have loved to have seen a touch more colour on the cheeks – the tiniest bit of pink could have lifted her look. Remember: if you’re going to go bold, make sure to touch up regularly. A smudged lip looks messy and sloppy.
Miranda Kerr
I love a statement lip on Miranda… And something we’ve not seen on her before – a vampy, deeper red to match her gown. But (of course) it works… What wouldn’t on that face… and coupled with that hair?! She’s a knockout. She’s balanced it nicely with a soft brown shadow and a smattering of individual lashes. Crimson is a face-flattering and relatively easy shade to pull off – you don’t need to be Miranda Kerr to wear a wine coloured lip!! Try a tinted balm or stain if you’re not comfortable going full steam with a bold shade.
Helen Mirren
Helen is so fabulous! She killed it on the Globes carpet and with simple accessories and hair and makeup, let her dress do most of the talking. She looked chic, age appropriate but…fierce?! A smoky eye, glowy skin and rose coloured lip all worked with her hair – which (unlike some!) looked soft and perfectly tousled. If I could change one thing (and I always will; I’m a perfectionist!) I would have softened (or eliminated) the liner on the lower lashes. As a general rule for the mature customer, black on the bottom lashline can sometimes look a bit hard. Black liner aside, Helen has a confidence and such a comfortable sense of her own style; she knows what works for her and she sticks with it… Young Hollywood, take note!
Kerry Washington
The bold and the beautiful, Kerry was one of the very few who went with colour on the eyes – and an absolute winner! The red carpet needs a few more Kerry Washington’s! The purple eyeshadow shade is bold, but the texture is sheer and fresh – just what her neutral Miu Miu frock needed. This eye definitely needed a great lash – and she delivered on this front too… Love the flush of pink on the cheek and natural lip. So well played! If you’re going for a coloured eye and your skin tone is on the medium to dark side, avoid using white on the inner rim of the eye – it can look stark. Try a nude or flesh coloured liner or a liner in a shade similar to the shadow. If eyeshadow is not your thing, smudge a coloured liner into the top lashline for a more low-key pop of colour.
