New York Fashion Week Hair: New Season Styles And Trends

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Pinterest

By Chloe Brinklow

Creativity doesn’t stop with the clothes at New York Fashion Week, and here at Rescu. HQ we don’t know how the designers do it! Dreaming up hair and make up, creating the perfect soundtrack and setting, and consulting with the best in the business, is all in a day’s work!

Today’s scoop? The hair! From buns to blowouts to quiffs and Pollyannas, Rescu. brings you what’s hot off the Runway, with tips and tricks to recreate the styles at home.

We Like Big Buns At Donna Karan

Buns are the new Black – or the new ponytail at least! And we think the bigger, the better! Die hard, Sex and the City fans will remember Carrie Bradshaw’s penchant for the regal up-do, and our guess is, Donna Karan referenced some old S&TC episodes for inspiration!

Sky-high and slick, this do is a dressier version of the wispy top-knot, and more grown up than the classic ballerina bun, typically worn a little lower. Perfect for a night out or a special occasion, this elegant, supersized up do, works best with long, thick hair and really accentuates cheekbones and eyes.

Rock Out With Your ‘Blow Out’ With DKNY

The hair at DKNY was part 60s flower child, part Charlie’s Angels, circa 1970. Picture perfect blow drys were ‘roughened up’ into a more creative and contemporary style, Eugene
Souleiman, explained, “It’s all about creating the perfect look and then bringing in imperfection, in this look we’ve done that by adding texture for a raw, sexy, ‘lived in’ look”

Worn with the hip and spirited collection, created by Donna Karan and inspired by New York City, we couldn’t imagine the hair any other way. It gelled perfectly with the black and white colour palette, that temporarily allowed glimpses of red, orange and navy to shine through.

Quiffs and Pollyanna at Peter Som

A half up, half down style, has never looked so sexy! “I was inspired by the heroines from the old Hitchcock movies to create a classic 50s up-do and then deconstruct it so that it looks rawer.,” Eugene Souleiman said.

Rescu. tip: When experimenting with this style in real life, it is important to remember its all about the texture! Use a sea salt spray, we love: Wella Professionals High HairOcean Spritz Beach Texture Spray ($23.50) to rough-it-up. To really perfect the look, start with damp hair, blow drying once the style is complete.

Structured and fluid at Vera Wang

Bold and romantic, this hair style was all about contrast, especially when it comes to texture. “Hair on top is shiny and smooth and falls completely back from the face, and becomes more matte as it’s shaped into a voluminous pony-roll, with loose strands falling down the back,” Orlando Pita at Orlo for Moroccanoil, who created the look explained.

This style requires a lot of hair spray especially on top for a real, gritty glamour finish. Rescu. recommends: Moroccanoil® Luminous Hairspray (330ml), $34.50. To strengthen the hold, for longer wearability, spray front and sides, combing backwards, then do a quick blast of the hair dryer! This will set the hairspray making it stronger.

Sideways buns at Carolina Herrera

According to Orlando Pitta, tousled hair is over, and we are moving to a more ‘done’ and polished place, in the styling arena. Complimenting the super chic and vastly monotonous colour palette of the clothing, the side parted front was paired with an inventive horizontal bun.

Instead of rolling or twisting the hair to create this bun, Pitta suggest tucking, almost like an envelope then securing with pins. Moroccanoil® Treatment (100ml), $49.50, is a secret, not so best kept! Apply before any styling to give hair a smooth and silky sheen while also strengthening and conditioning.
