The advantage of being a season behind the fashion week headliners, like New York, is we get to see the ready to wear hair and beauty looks ahead of our own Autumn/ Winter season – and you know a good Aussie girl loves to stay ahead of the fash-pack and be on-trend. Find your fave new ‘do as we dissect the new look ponytails, buns and braids for when things get a little chilly.

If Rag + Bone is anything to go by (and it is) it seems the tailored yet relaxed-chic is the ready to wear look of the Winter 2013 season – and we need a hair look to match. The delightfully messy, yet structured take on the standard chignon seen at the runway show, gave a swift nod towards the 60s. Rescu. loves the Edie Segdwick inspired do; feminine with a soft tomboy edge. For your softest chignon with the right amount of edge, twist into a loose knot, securing with pins and letting the ‘wispy’ ends out, pull the hair up a bit at the crown, just to add a little height.
If you’re a more is more kinda girl, then Alexander Wang’s futuristic hair look on his robotic models is the wearable drama you’ve been waiting for. The sleek yet extreme two-tone ponytail complements the modern fur and leather filled collection – with the artificial look being part of its appeal. Creator of the look, Guido Palau, Redken Creative Consultant said, “It’s very exposing, and while many women don’t often pull their hair back this dramatically, it’s amazing how elegant it can look and how effective it can be as a dramatic look for a night out.”
If you’ve seen Victoria Beckham lately, tottering through the high-end streets of New York or London, she’s been taking the low pony in her stride, which is exactly what her models did on the runway. This low maintenance, glossy and sexy low pony is the perfect off-duty addition to any outfit. The shiny texture really boosts the look, not to red carpet extremes but perfect for subtle and casual-chic.
Perfect VB Pony Tip: Gather hair into a loose low pony with a messy, undefined side part. Pull out some pieces around the face and leave one ear exposed.
It was all men’s business in the front and understated sexy at the back at Australian brand, Tome’s debut showing at NYFW. If you’re tired of the round, tight look your ponytail usually makes at the front, opt for the square, masculine look from the front. The aim is to pull the sides back tight and add some messy height to the top. Build product to create the wet look through the sides and the ponytail. Rescu. recommends using Redken hardwear gel 16 ($29.95).
Nothing says sports-luxe like a fishtail braid and Veronica Beard‘s pioneer inspired models went one step further with their ‘hunting hair’; a loose and wispy fishtail swept to the side that made raccoon vests and plaid jackets undoubtedly modern and full of rough-luxe sensibility. Find out how to master the fishtail braid.
“After hearing the brand’s inspiration, we knew that we wanted to interpret the traditional cowgirl hair style by giving a unique twist,” says O&M Creative Director Janelle Chaplin. “A deconstructed side fishtail braid combined spirit of a modern cowgirl’s hair the overall theme of the collection.” For the sexy, textured, tussled look Rescu. recommends O&M’s K-Gravel Texture Spray ($12.95).
