Nicole Kidman has returned to the Cannes Film Festival to premiere her new film Grace of Monaco, and although the much-anticipated flick hasn’t garnered rave reviews from film buffs, no one can deny our Nic is a flawless red carpet act….
The star wore one seriously incredible blue Armani Prive gown that featured a Swarovski studded bodice and looked every bit the royalty she plays in the film. By every single account this was the kind of next-level red carpet look that we’ll remember for years to come.
Unfortunately, the glowing praise stops there. Reviews following the screening, which opened the 11-day Cannes Film Festival, were dismal to say the least. The Hollywood Reporter described it as, “middlebrow mush”, The Telegraph as “fantastically silly”, and Screen International as, “a schmaltzy, soft-focus rear-end to last year’s car crash biopic Diana.” Ouch.
Earlier that day at a Press Conference, 46-year-old Kidman shared her feelings on the negative feedback from Princess Grace’s family;
“Obviously I feel sad because I think the film has no malice towards the family or towards Grace and Rainer. It’s fictionalised, obviously; it’s not a biopic. There’s the essence of truth, but you take dramatic license at times.
But I understand also because, that is their mother and father and I understand the protection of the privacy of their mother and father.
It’s awkward is what it is, but I say that and I still sort of have respect and I want them to know the performance was done with love and that ultimately I think that if they did ever see it, they would see that there’s an enormous amount of affection for both their parents, and the love story of their parents.”
Grace of Monaco will be released in Australia on June 5
