We’ve all cottoned onto the fact that online is big business- and digital retail is booming. Most Australian women regularly shop online, attracted by affordable prices and ease of access compared to shopping in a physical retail environment. Whether for clothes, shoes, beauty products or home wares, buying online is often quicker, easier and more efficient in the time-poor working woman’s life.
Fashion designer Monica Rouse has launched online boutique Miss Moncur, after a successful career in the fashion industry in Australia and abroad. Offering quality pieces at low prices, Miss Moncur offers up to date and frequent drops, and is perfect for the average girl who doesn’t want to spend all her spare time in the shopping mall. We spoke to Monica about the launch of the site, her inspiration in creating her own fashion label, and why the online fashion industry is the way to go.
RESCU: How did you get started in the fashion industry, and which designers have you previously worked with?
Monica Rouse: It really started as I had the opportunity of moving to Hong Kong after studying Design and Fashion at UTS. I gained hands on experience of the industry there, from visiting factories throughout Asia, world buying trips for various global retailers, to working on exclusive ranges for Shanghai Tang at Richemont.
RESCU: What inspired you to head out on your own and start the ‘Miss Moncur’ label?
Monica Rouse: After living in London, which is the largest market for e-tailers, I saw an opportunity to create an online fashion destination that coupled both an inspirational high spec environment together with affordable prices. Somewhere I know both myself and my friends would want to visit.
RESCU: What are the benefits of an online store, over boutique or retail sales? What would you say are the main differences between selling online compared to more traditional, in-store sales?
Monica Rouse: Convenience for the girl who works 9-5, the ability to reach markets that a bricks and mortar boutique is unable to do, and to offer anyone inspiration and transformation at any time and anywhere they wish.
RESCU: Are there any design features that will run through each collection? Do you think it is important for your brand that your pieces are recognisable?
Monica Rouse: The style focus at Miss Moncur is flattering silhouettes with touches of unique detailing, such as laser cut-outs, beading, exclusive prints, lace work and Japanese fabrications. Each season includes an exclusive women’s wear edit of the latest trends and wardrobe staples, as well as international style inspiration.
RESCU: What has inspired you in the creation of your first range?
Monica Rouse: Miss Moncur is about offering chic and affordable luxury. The inspiration for our clothing and accessories comes from the different styles and different trends between Sydney, Hong Kong and London.
RESCU: What is in the future for Miss Moncur?
Monica Rouse: To continue to offer an e-tail experience that inspires, with more seasonal drops and a broader reach into new markets with accessories and resort wear.
