Oscar Nominations 2015: Snubs, Favourites and Complete List

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Pinterest

A Golden Globe is great, a BAFTA is nice, but an Oscar is the statuette every Hollywood heavyweight is dreaming of placing on their mantel.

The most prestigious and, let’s face it, exciting awards ceremony nominees have been announced and the list features exactly what one would expect as well as one pretty major and obvious snub…

Ava DuVernay’s Selma, a moving biopic about Martin Luther King Jr., received a nod for best picture and best original song (for the Golden Globe winning Glory by Common and John Legend), but nothing for the film’s director and actors. This is a particular shock for Ava DuVernay who was a frontrunner in the many nominee predictions and would have been the first African American woman to have ever been nominated in the Director category.

Unsurprisingly, Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel (which cleaned up at the Golden Globes — see the Full Winners List here) came in with the most nominations, tying with an impressive nine each. The Imitation Game came in third place with eight nominations, followed by Boyhood and American Sniper with six each. Interstellar, Foxcatcher, and Whiplash each came in with a strong five.

Already one nominated celebrity, Emma Stone, has managed to make a statement that went viral. After receiving her first ever Oscar nomination for her supporting role in Birdman, in which she plays Michael Keaton’s wonderfully stuck-up daughter, the star released a press statement that read, “Well, this is surreal. I am completely knocked out. Thank you to the Academy for this incredible honor. I am very proud and lucky to be part of Birdman and I can’t believe it came to this. I am so f––ing excited. Are you allowed to say ‘f––’ when making a statement for the Oscars? I’m just really f––ing excited.” Here’s hoping there are some quick-fingered censorship managers on board should Stone be the one to take out the award!

The 87th Academy Awards are set to take place on Sunday February 22nd, Monday in Australia, at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre. Neil Patrick Harris, a seasoned awards show pro, will be taking over hosting duties from Ellen DeGeneres who last year brought in a reported eight per cent increase in viewership and took that all-start selfie that broke Twitter and was said to have earned the show a huge $1 billion in publicity. Harris certainly has big shoes to fill, but we’re confident the funny guy can do it.
