All The Behind-The-Scenes Oscars Fashion Gossip
We know who won – but we also know you’re dying to get the scoop on the behind-the-scenes drama at the Oscars.
And this year, there was plenty, with many A-listers’ choices having surprising back stories.
Jennifer Lawrence‘s red Dior first looked like a pretty conventional choice – slinky, scarlet, gorgeous – but it got red carpet commentators whispering. She’d told the press she and Dior were working on ‘something vintage’ for the awards – and that wasn’t it.
So what happened? Did no vintage Dior work? Was there a last-minute dress disaster? Or did Dior pull rank and tell their girl (whom they pay millions per year) to wear an up-to-the-moment gown, or else? Nobody’s talking, but we wonder…
Another whisper-worthy choice? Anne Hathaway. After her much-publicised faux pas with Valentino last Oscars (said she was going to wear a custom gown by the house, changed her mind at the last minute, had to issue a public apology), people were wondering if the two had made up.
Answer: nope. She wore Gucci and there wasn’t a hint of Valentino in sight. Pity – he designed her wedding dress. Is this the end of a beautiful friendship?
Others had more prosaic problems. Kristen Bell nearly suffered from a horrible dress drama when an Oscars organiser trod on her dress in front of the cameras. Train rips aren’t uncommon at the big awards, but her delicate tiered Roberto Cavalli would not have recovered very well.
And Giuliana Rancic, the E! news host, wore an Aussie designer to commentate on the red carpet – newbies Paolo Sebastian – but had a malfunction when its zip broke live on air, prompting her cohost Kelly Osbourne to try and fix it on-camera. Not such great publicity for the label.
Meanwhile, Angelina Jolie showed off her key Oscars tip – she wore her shoes, silver stilettos, to the Oscars rehearsal, and told volunteers that she’s learned “always to wear the shoes to rehearsal”, just in case something drastic happens.
And who wore the most expensive jewels? You’d think perhaps one of the nominees would win this one, and Jennifer Lawrence certainly stepped up, with a 100-carat $2 million Neil Lane necklace, as did Sandra Bullock, with $1.8 million Lorraine Schwartz earrings. And Cate Blanchett didn’t go small with her Chopard earrings, which featured a boggling 62 white opals.
But Charlize Theron accessorised her black custom Dior with a whopping $15 million in Harry Winston jewels, including a drop-dead necklace, proving that A-listers don’t have to be nominees to get the biggest bling on the block.

Oscars Trend: The Backward Necklace
We’re calling it the J.Law necklace look- a long string of jewels slung back from the neck to cascade down the back.
And it’s mega-hot right now on the red carpet.
Lawrence wore her necklace backward-style the first time at the 2013 Oscars, where she paired a delicate pearl string with that huge Dior, and again this year with a platinum diamond chain.
And Anne Hathaway did it last year, slinging her choker over backwards (though we suspect it’s because she infamously changed dresses at the last minute).
So here’s your guide to working the backward necklace, J.Law style.
Slinging your jewels casually backwards is actually a revival of a trend in the 1920s-30s, which highlighted the low, low backs of flapper dresses by hanging jewels between the bare shoulder blades. Very, very daring for the time (look at Myrna Loy’s coy expression).
And then, of course, Audrey Hepburn famously accessorised her Givenchy in Breakfast At Tiffany’s with a choker of pearls that hung at her shoulder blades. Desperately chic.
The look works best on people who are showing off great backs, and particularly those who have big busts, for whom long necklaces can hang awkwardly on the front of the body or get lost in cleavage. Wearing it down your back instead might solve the problem.
J.Law’s worked it with strapless gowns, but it’s also elegant with any dress with an open back or a plain one. Make sure the length of your necklace (it doesn’t have to be full-length like J.Law’s) sits properly with the dress as you wear it, and doesn’t clash or get caught.
It can also figure well with high-necked outfits, as long as you keep the lines of the necklace and the top complimentary.
The necklace has to be interesting all the way round – pendants don’t work for this. Think strings of pearls or gems that look just as good from the front as from the back.
And wear your hair up – you want to accentuate the length of your neck and the elegance of the necklace’s drape.
Are you ready to go J.Law with a backwards necklace on your next formal night out?

Katie Holmes Suffers Another Divorce – From Her Fashion Line Partner
Katie Holmes’ fashion line, Holmes & Yang, is no more.
And the reason behind it seems to be some personal drama.
Holmes & Yang was Holmes’ partnership with Jeanne Yang, and it sold exclusively in high-end boutiques in America.
But now it’s all abruptly over, and a source has leaked that the reason might be Yang’s big mouth.
It seems that Yang was allegedly responsible for telling the press about details of Katie’s more famous divorce, from couch jumper Tom Cruise, and that the fashion duo couldn’t mend the rift.
The source used the term ‘interpersonal conflict’ to describe the split. Ouch.
For their part, Holmes and Yang are staying dumb, insisting that they ‘planned’ to end the line this year and that nothing dramatic has happened.
What do you think: manufactured drama or a good reason to dump a business partner?
