Fashion commentator Glynis Traill-Nash on the return of the pussy-bow blouse, Portmans’ new magazine and red carpet moments from the L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival.
Uptown Girl
Portmans have again made the most of its “face”, top model Abbey Lee Kershaw. They shot her in New York for their latest campaign, which also features in its first magazine, Up, available in stores now. Edited by Louise Roe of makeover show Plain Jane fame, it reads as more than a catalogue, featuring mini profiles on the likes of Julia Restoin-Roitfeld and Kym Ellery, as well as event highlights and hot new things for the year. All alongside shoots featuring the Portmans autumn/winter collection, of course. Look out for their classic trench coats, cosy knits and lovely blouses.
Here, pussy-bow
Speaking of blouses… Sometimes it’s a fine balance between looking feminine and looking too girlie. If you think that pussy-bow blouses—which are having something of a comeback this season—fall too heavily into the latter category, look at Glee star Naya Rivera’s outfit and think again. The contrast bow on the simple white blouse is a nice touch—you could do something similar with a plain blouse and a long scarf—while the high-waisted, skinny trousers toughen it up, making it a little more rock ’n roll. I also love the pale blue shoes—they’re slightly “off”, which makes them just right. Perfection isn’t the aim here—it’s about making the look your own. You could also wear a pussy-bow blouse tucked into high-waisted flared jeans and wear with wedges for a fabulous ’70s look—also right on trend. And a pussy-bow blouse and a pencil skirt is oh-so-ladylike, and very Mad Men.
LMFF moments
The L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival is over for another year, and there were some memorable red carpet moments. Melissa George proved her fashion credentials as the face of the Festival. At the Alex Perry show on Wednesday night, George went classic glamour in a draped gown with Old Hollywood hair and Make-up. The neckline detailing and the contrasting belt gave it a modern twist.
Meanwhile, Andie MacDowell looked ravishing in Aurelio Costarella. The colour is beautiful and flattering to her skintone, and the marabou jacket acts a little like soft focus along with her gently waved hair. The monochrome palette is also very on-trend—we saw so many designers the past fall season doing one tone top-to-toe. The feathers also give a great texture to the ensemble, another thing to keep in mind for autumn/winter.
