We’ve identified the most common hair conditions and gone to Redken Hair Director Todd Arndt and stylist at Vogue Nationale in Queensland for his top tips for caring for and treating them.

Itchy scalp and dandruff
- Use a soft bristle brush to help brush out the dead skin cells through the lengths. Follow by using a shampoo and conditioner from the Redken Scalp Relief range.
- You could either use the Dandruff Control or Soothing Balance Shampoo to help further reduce flaking, irritation and itching.
- Using cool to warm water will also be less stressful on the scalp, rather than using hot water which may irritate it further.
Oily hair
- Try to avoid running your fingers through your hair and along the scalp because this actually stimulates the sebaceous glands and creates more oil.
- Over washing the hair could also cause the scalp to become oily so it’s recommended to wash your hair every 2-3 days.
- Try using the Redken Scalp Relief Oil Detox shampoo to help minimise oiliness through the hair.
Very dry hair
- To help prevent very dry hair, I recommend a haircut every 4-5 weeks and a treatment at least once a month. With treatments you could either get an in-salon Redken Chemistry shot treatment or you could use an at-home hair treatment.
- If the hair is excessively dry, we recommend using Redken Real Control Intense Renewal, which is super moisturising, adds shine to the hair and also makes it more manageable.
- After shampooing with a very conditioning and moisturising shampoo like Redken All Soft Shampoo, apply and comb the treatment through the hair and leave in for 5- 10 minutes. Next wash it out for great silky result.
Dull lacklustre hair
- To make dull hair look shinier, healthier and full of life, I recommend having a Redken Shades EQ colour put through. It’s like a colour gloss that also makes the hair feel smoother. There are 57 different shades to cater for a darker or natural result, or a tone free gloss.
- Less ironing, blow drying and brushing will also help the hair look and feel healthier.
Overly treated or chemically damaged hair
- I recommend using the Redken Extreme range. The Redken Extreme Shampoo helps restore distressed hair. It has proteins, lipids and ceramides to help build internal strength to the hair.
- The Redken CAT treatment is also recommended. It’s a leave in treatment that can be sprayed into towel dried hair.
- To prevent more damage to chemically damaged hair it’s important to be gentle when brushing or combing; and best avoid ironing the hair too much.
Pregnancy
- Sometimes during pregnancy women are scared of irritation on the scalp or even anything too concentrated. So I recommend using the Pureology range of shampoo and conditioners. The 100% vegan ingredients means there is no sulphate that is damaging to the hair. This is also a great range for pregnant women because there are four different categories available; Hydrate, Pure Volume, Super Smooth or Essential Repair, all containing an AntiFade Complex to protect coloured hair.
- For pregnant women, either foils or semi permanents are best if you want to colour your hair. With foils any colour can be used because it’s not touching the scalp, while semi permanents don’t contain ammonia.
