Rescu. has been on the lookout for advanced skin care and skin rejuvenating products and treatments. We recently discovered the transformative benefits of IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) at Next of Skin. We asked Alexia Shinas, skin care expert and co-founder of Next of Skin Beauty, to introduce us to IPL.
RESCU: What is IPL?
Alexia Shinas: “IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) for Skin Rejuvenation is a non-invasive treatment used to improve many skin conditions such as ageing and sun damaged skin in a softer, gentler way.”
RESCU: How does IPL work?
Alexia Shinas: “Using specific wavelengths of light the light converts to heat, which damages the target cells whilst leaving the surrounding skin unaffected. This also stimulates the fibroblasts which then produce new collagen. As the new collagen forms, it softens the appearance of ageing skin.”
RESCU: Name three celebrities who you think would benefit from IPL treatment.
Alexia Shinas:
“1. Lindsay Lohan – blotchy sun damaged skin. Pigmented lesions, breakouts, lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone & texture.
2. Pamela Anderson – all that time spent in the sun has caught up with her. Her skin looks far older that her 42 years.
3. Brad Pitt – uneven texture due to years of acne has left Brad with ice pick scarring.”
RESCU: Who would you recommend this treatment for?
Alexia Shinas:
“Anyone wanting better skin. It is an ideal treatment for those with an active lifestyle as the procedure requires no downtime and is low risk.
IPL Treats: freckles, sunspots and general pigmentation, spider veins, red spots and broken capillaries, sun damage, uneven skin colouring.”
RESCU: What does the treatment feel like?
Alexia Shinas: “It feels like tiny rubber bands being flicked across the skin. Post treatment clients can experience a mild sunburn like sensation. This should disappear anywhere between 30 minutes to 3 hours.”
RESCU: What kind of results have your clients experienced?
Alexia Shinas: “Instantly the skin will appear radiant, refreshed and will show improved tone, texture and reduced pore size making skin appear more youthful and healthy looking.
Expect results such as: improved appearance or fading of the pigmented or vascular lesions and the dramatic improvement on fine lines. The degree of which this happens does depend on the individual’s response and the amount of skin damage.
Pigmented areas usually heal between 14-30 days and should continue to fade over the next 2-8 weeks. For spider veins, this may take up to 14 days for the vessel to either fully or partly resolve or gradually fade leaving the skin with a normal appearance.”
RESCU: Is anyone IPL is not suitable for?
Alexia Shinas: “IPL is not suitable for:
* Unprotected sun exposure, sunburn or solarium use 4 weeks prior to treatment
* Pregnancy
* History of Seizures
* Severe Eczema or Psoraisis on the area to be treated
* Active Skin Infections eg. herpes
* Roaccutane taken in the last 6 months
* Very Dark Skin
* Photo Sensitising Medications (check with your doctor).”
RESCU: How long is a course of treatment and how often do you recommend this course to your clients?
Alexia Shinas: “Generally a series of 5 to 6 IPL Skin Rejuvenation treatments is usually required every week for the first 3 treatments. The following 2-3 treatments are scheduled fortnightly.
A follow up treatment is recommended every 6 months for optimum results. If the patient is a smoker or has a stressful lifestyle, a follow up treatment is best performed every 3 months.”
