Six weeks ago, we road-tested a professional Dermaroller treatment. The invitation was to experience the latest breakthrough in skin therapy that has had a lot of celebrity buzz. The promise: Dermaroller is an alternative to laser treatments and chemical peels for acne scars, pigmentation, skin firmness and fine lines.
The Treatment:
A 2 hour salon procedure involving a deep cleansing and preparation of the skin, followed by the application and thorough needling of the face with the only TGA listed skin needling device on the Australian market.
The facts: The Dermaroller™ Collagen Induction Therapy procedure works by stimulating your own body’s collagen. Your body will start to naturally regenerate the skin, working below the surface in the dermis. New skin cells are generated and blood supply is enhanced. Typically, it takes at least 6 weeks before signs of change are visible, but the good news is that with home care, the process will continue over the following months promising a gradual, natural and longer lasting result.

What we noticed:
A definite reduction in pore size and smoothness of skin texture. After week two, there was a visible improvement of skin plumpness, which continued to improve subtly every week. By week six, pigmentation appeared less visible particularly around the eye area and forehead. And skin seemed smoother and more plump in general.
Keeping up appearances:
The treatment is quite expensive (starting at $600, but can be up to $800 depending on how the skin is prepped and treatments that go with it) so it was great to know that there is a take-home hand-held roller device that can be used to continue the treatment. Using this device alone will not get results nearly as quickly (about 6 months), but it’s an excellent option to keep the glow.
The Dermaroller is like a small paint-roller with fine needles. On the surface of the roller, a total 192 needles are positioned in a circular layout, with a fine needle length of only 0.13 mm. Whilst the needles are small enough to be relatively painless, the treatment is invasive (needles pierce the skin) and a numbing cream is applied to the skin 30 minutes before treatment to ensure no discomfort.
