The Rosemount Australian Fashion Week witnessed the Down Under debut of Roopa, the eponymous label by Melbourne designer Roopa Pemmaraju. A novice to the Australian fashion scene, Roopa is well-established in her native India, where she has been making waves for years with her luxurious resortwear – stunning printed silk kaftans, harem pants, maxi dresses and swimwear.
Roopa’s hand-beaded ‘Beach Goddess’ designs mix such apparent opposites as ancient Indian culture famed for its love of rich textiles and multimillionaire boho queen Talitha Getty. Lush greens, blues, warm yellows and fiery reds are contrasted with rustic whites and greys to create the kind of a rush no secluded ashram can offer.
Roopa is currently pursuing her Masters in Fashion and Textile at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, interspersed with frequent visits to her studio in India where her designs are brought to life. No embellishment is too lavish, no print too ornate for Roopa, while she is adamant about executing her vision in fluid, clean lines.
Her label is currently available at international stockists in Hong Kong, Dubai and the US and with Roopa’s innate talent and passion, her swimwear range is granted to take on the Australian market and become a household name.
