Twitter has been in a flurry all week over Kyle Sandilands latest attack on a female journalist. We uncover the details on the story that has had everyone talking and doesn’t seem to be slowing down.
Yet another advertisement has been blasted by the Advertising Standards Authority and banned! This time the actress involved is 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld. Read on for all the details.
Finally, we catch up with Princess Mary and Prince Frederik on their Australian tour.
Sandilands Scandal
The power of social media has yet again been revealed after shock jock radio host Kyle Sandilands verbally attacked a female journalist on air. It all started when, on Monday night, Network 7 show Kyle & Jackie O’s Night With the Stars to a sea of seemingly unimpressed views.
On Tuesday morning, news.com.au journalist Alison Stephenson wrote a piece about the negative viewer comments that were coming through Twitter that called the show a disaster, awkward viewing and, “like watching a car crash.”
After reading the piece, Sandilands hit back on air, calling Stephenson a, ‘little troll’ and a, ‘fat slag’.
By Wednesday the outrage on social media had grown to new heights and major sponsors of Kyle and Jackie O’s radio show started to pull sponsorship. First to go was Holden, followed by The Good Guys and by Thursday night eleven sponsors including Mazda, Telstra, Crazy John’s, Harvey Norman, Blackmores and many more had pulled sponsorship effective immediately.
The saga continues with a petition to pull the show doing the round and continued public outcry.
Is this the last straw for Sandilands? Only time will tell!
Hailee Steinfeld Amid Advertising Scandal
True Grit star 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld’s Miu Miu campaign is the latest to spark concern from the Advertising Standards Authority and has thus been removed. This time the issue is not, as it so often is, about images being too provocative but safety concerns.
The picture in question was taken by fashion photographer and filmmaker Bruce Webber and shows the teenage actress sitting on a train track while wiping away a tear. The ASA have blasted the campaign as being, “irresponsible” because it depicts a child in an unsafe location.
Prada Retail UK, who own the Miu Miu brand, have defended the shot claiming it was, “part of a serious, high-fashion campaign” and, “based on the set of an imaginary film.” They added that is was clear Steinfeld, “could have easily moved away from where she was sitting because she was not restrained in any way.”
But the ASA have not budged, saying the railway setting was irresponsible considering the starlet’s age.
We’re starting to wonder if the ASA is taking things a little too far or simple making an example of major campaign to force smaller companies to tone things down.
Princess Mary and Prince Frederik Charm Melbourne
Yesterday Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary spent their second day at Melbourne at the children’s activity centre in Birrarung Matt. The charming couple greeted well-wishers outside before moving include to play with Lego with the kids. One of the children even handed Mary a Lego version of the Danish flag!
As the visit came to an end, Mary, dressed in a pretty white skirt, floral print shirt and nude heels, was embraced by some of the little girls who clearly took to the Princess very quickly!
Today the pair are headed to Broken Hill before going back to Melbourne and then to meet Mary’s family.
