Fashion and trend expert, Tony Bannister brings us the Duffle Coat fresh from Tokyo, a must have in menswear this Winter.
This winter, menswear is all about the Duffle jacket Like a Duffle coat but slashed to the hipbone, at least every second guy under 30 is wearing one in Tokyo this winter.
In a highly unscientific survey on Japanese TV, 80% of women aged 18 to 25 thought guys in Duffle Jackets looked hotter than any other winter coat!
In our own highly subjective testing the girls were split 50-50 between duffle jackets and the shrunken biker style – in leather or felted wool.
The up-shot: Either way, I predict men are going to get cold backsides this winter.
The Duffle jacket is most commonly styled quite preppy: over layered check shirts and rolled-cuff chinos, hiking boots or deck shoes and heavy-rimmed glasses. I’ve also seen guys sporting bow ties and braces, and sometimes pilgrim-style bowler hats.
The local brands I love in Japan are Urban Research, United Arrows, Nano Universe and Beams, plus US brand Nepenthes and classic British Barbour.
