Model-turned-jewellery design Erin Wasson has just launched her new LowLuv collection, this time inspired by symbolism from a variety of cultures from Native American to Middle Eastern. There are a couple of recurring motifs, including the evil eye and crucifixes, while other pieces feature rough crystals and black agates. The overall feeling is rough-hewn, helped along by the many hammered metal pieces including rings, chandelier earrings and hand jewellery. The rings pictured here range from $109–$229. The Big Retro Chill
The New York Fall shows have just started, while in Australia the stores are being filled with autumn/winter stock (despite the fact that we’re still wearing our summer city shorts). And while it’s too soon to say what the overall feel of the season will be, early signs tell us that the 1970s are here to stay. In just the first few days of the shows, a number of labels sent out looks with that ’70s feeling, including BCBG Max Azria, Lyn Devon, Christian Siriano and celeb favourite Rachel Zoe. And you can start tapping into that trend pronto. Polonecks were everywhere, underpinning layered or more minimal looks. Wolford always do amazing poloneck bodysuits for this look. For maxi dresses, look to Kate Sylvester’s ruffle-fronted deep green silk number or Fleur Wood’s Miss Porter maxi. Zimmermann is doing great herringbone wide-legged trousers, perfect with slim-fitting body shirts, as well as floral jumpsuits. Celeb watch
Did we mention that ’70s feeling? Laura Bailey faced up at the Paul film premiere in London looking too cool for school in wide-legged trousers with printed blouse. The chain-strap shoulder bag and beret add a certain je ne sais quoi with a touch of Parisian flair.
What’s this? Helena Bonham Carter looking… good? Excuse the surprise, but Bonham Carter has become best known for her suspect style choices over the years. But here at the Oscars Nominees Luncheon she’s kept things simple—albeit a bit too black—in this chic black dress, and an abundance of oversized Kailis pearls. I’ve long loved the jewellery-over-gloves thing, and although her favourite Lulu Guinness handbag would have been better replaced by something simpler and more colourful, this is a great look. There’s hope for Oscar night yet.
Festival Frenzy
It’s not long to go now until the annual L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival, and this year looks like it’s shaping up to be bigger and better than ever. For the first time, the event will kick off with a huge public event at the Melbourne Convention Centre called Fashion Full Stop. Featuring Australian fashion from the 1960s to today—from the likes of Prue Acton, Bonds, JAG, Linda Jackson, sass & bide and Collette Dinnigan—the 50-minute spectacular will also showcase live music from Guy Sebastian, Mark Seymour, Owl Eyes and DJ Agent 86, among others.
