As we all know by now, Carrie and those gals from SATC have reached modern day style icon status. I am so excited about the forthcoming flick! Like everyone else, I can’t wait to see what fabulous outfits now famed costumer Pat Fields has styled up for us to drool over.
With Abu Dhabi as an exotic backdrop, the high priestess of glamour herself, Carrie, will no doubt shine her signature brand of glamour. No matter what she’s up to, she always looks super fabulous.
For us mere mortals however, everyday glamour does not involve stylish trips to the orient and beyond, spacious and well lit wardrobes, nor a seemingly unlimited budget for its contents (this doesn’t stop us dreaming though!).
There are however some clever ways in which you too can look glamorous in your off-screen everyday life. You don’t need to wear expensive designer gowns to look glamorous (although an Alex Perry or two will help – sorry, couldn’t resist), nor have a bevy of stylists in tow. Just follow my tips below and you too can ‘Carrie on’ glamorously…
1. Always wear heels. True glamour girls can sprint in their heels, no matter the destination – Coles, the office, the bus stop or the doctor’s surgery.
Heels always guarantee an instant glamour pick me up … and the higher the heel the closer to glamour guru status. There are no excuses for those grassy lawn moments … a high wedge heel or espadrille will maintain the glamour factor (even in such close proximity to nature). Keep chic ballet flats in the car – only so you don’t ruin your Manolos whilst driving.
2. Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise! Carrie is known for her penchant for large floral corsages, personalised necklaces, belts, cocktail rings, hats, earrings, scarves, gloves and quirky handbags. Accessories will glamorise any outfit from drab to fab.
3. Fabulous hair is paramount to achieving SATC style. Carrie is never afraid to try a new do … whether a long ironed out sheet, cheeky cropped mass, wild and carefree curls or scraped back “up do”.
Adorn hair with headbands, clips, braids or headscarves. Salon perfect or tamed at home, keep your look fresh by trying out new looks with your locks. Even a bad hair day can become a glamour triumph with a fabulous hat.
4. Wear colour and prints. Carrie is always wearing colourful prints with an eclectic mix of vibrant boho chic with va-voom. Colour lifts our spirits and prints add a playful twist to any outfit.
5. Always dress to flatter your figure. Be adventurous in your choices by all means, but remember to choose pieces that accentuate your attributes and disguise your flaws. Only flaunt your curves if they are in all the right places (or only dress like Samantha if you have the body to match!).
6. Find your signature style and stick to it. Embrace trends but don’t be a slave to them. Develop your own sense of style and be “inspired” by runway and magazine fashion, not dictated by it. Have fun with fashion – after all, that’s what it is intended for.
7. Invest in classic key pieces that form the basis of any good wardrobe. Spend on quality that will last several seasons, or until they die a natural death.
Classic glamour shopping list should include a classic trench coat, denim jeans that make you look a size smaller, a crisp white man-style shirt and a killer Little Black Dress.
8. Combine old and new – pair vintage with ultra modern, classics with quirky. This is the secret to achieving Carrie’s style, so mix it up to keep your look fresh.
9. Everyday glamour isn’t just limited to your wardrobe … get plenty of rest (between nights on the town with your gal pals), drink lots of water (in between Cosmopolitans), take regular exercise (running downtown in heels counts) and of course … find your Mr Big!
Okay girls, so now you are set to take on the city [or Coles, or the office, or the bus stop or wherever you are headed today]. Unfortunately I can’t guarantee you will land an all-expenses-paid six-star trip to Abu Dhabi, but at least now you will look the part of high glamour…
