Celebrity kiddie spotting has become a sport in its own right, with the offspring of the rich and famous developing a strong sense of style at a very young age. Suri Cruise is often seen wearing the latest fashion specifically made in mini versions, while Victoria Beckham’s son Romeo has followed in his mother’s footsteps and has just released his first sunglasses range.
With many Hollywood actors seeming to settle down and start families, our obsession with their lives has extended to their children – what they eat, where they play and most importantly, what they are wearing.
One celebrity tot that has always been the focus of our attention is Shiloh Jolie-Pitt. The first biological daughter of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt is constantly snapped with her large family, and her style is always documented and dissected by tabloid magazines around the world. More recently, Shiloh has been adopting a style that is decidedly tomboy, sporting a new short haircut and preferring to wear boy’s clothing. Brad Pitt recently told Oprah that Shiloh is even insisting she is addressed as John, her favourite character in Peter Pan.
There has been plenty of criticism directed towards Angelina and Brad, with many worried that the repression of Shiloh’s girly nature could be detrimental, particularly if these clothing choices are being forced onto Shiloh in order to make a fashion statement, and with constant comparisons with other celebrity children such as Suri Cruise – whose penchant for dresses and high heels never goes unnoticed – it isn’t hard to spot Shiloh’s overtly tomboyish behaviour.
While there is concern that Shiloh’s tomboy nature is not completely innocent, many people have hit back, saying that it is a good thing that Shiloh is picking out clothes that express her style, and this rebellion against feminine dressing shows a child that is on the path to becoming confident in her personality and fashion sense – while many people would like to see Shiloh dress in more fashionable attire for a three year old, it would be good to keep in mind that we might be witnessing the making of a fashion vagabond who makes the trends rather then follows them.
