Hair stylist Barney Martin of Sydeny’s Barney Martin Hair salon, shares his techniques, tips and tools for ensuring voluminous, shiny, A-list tresses all year round.
Rescu: What’s the most popular hairstyle being requested by your salon clients?
Barney Martin: For short hair, clients are often requesting a Michelle Williams inspired pixie cut and variations of short textured bobs inspired by the Great Gatsby and the late great Vidal Sassoon. For longer hair, clients are now going slightly less glamorous and are asking for styles and cuts with more of a grunge feel.
Rescu: For someone with particularly fine hair, how can they achieve sleek but ensure it’s not flat?
Barney Martin: The best way to achieve a sleek style with fine hair would be to tease the underneath well then brush it out over the top. Pulling it back into a sleek style after teasing at the roots will give it a little more height and volume through the top. Apply some styling product to smooth it out and give it that sleek texture.
Rescu: What advice would you give to rescue dry locks?
Barney Martin: I recommend an intensive treatment at least once a week to keep hair healthy.
Rescu: What expert tips can you give to help us maintain nourished shiny hair and avoid dull, lackluster tresses during the hot, humid summer?
Barney Martin: In the warmer months people often forget that UV rays can be responsible for colour fade and drying out your hair, so if you know you’re going to be sitting out in the sun or going to the beach apply a leave-in treatment with UV protection and wear a hat – it’ll protect your hair as well as your skin. As mentioned, conditioning treatments are great for maintaining nourished and shiny hair. A top tip for summer would be to wet your hair with fresh water before swimming in chlorinated swimming pools, this will help prevent the harsh chemicals penetrating the cuticle and drying your hair out.
Rescu: Rumour has it there’s a certain method of washing the hair that prevents breakages and prompts faster hair growth. Do you have any secrets to share about this?
Barney Martin: Massaging your scalp while shampooing will promote blood circulation and in turn better hair growth and after conditioning, rinse through with luke warm water rather than steaming hot water to close the hair cuticle and prevent breakage of the hair. Also, don’t vigorously towel dry wet hair as this will cause further damage and breakage – gently pat dry and let it dry naturally for the best results.
