Yayoi Kusama is, if you’ve never heard of her, the dottiest lady in art – she puts dots on everything, once fitting an entire room at the MCA in Sydney with suspended dots which seemed to stretch forever.

Suffice to say that if you’re into polka dots, this is the collaboration for you.
Marc Jacobs, who’s also worked with notorious artist Richard Prince, is a big fan of Kusama, and the collection is timed to coincide with a huge retrospective of her work at the Whitney Museum in New York. Louis Vuitton have backed her work since 2006, and Jacobs is now covering everything from trench coats to pyjamas with her signature polka dots.
Kusama isn’t the typical artist collaborator – she freely admits she spends most of her time in an open asylum in Japan – but the collection itself looks decidedly sweet and bonkers.
The collection is already getting delighted buzz by fans who love its resemblance to a classier leopard print, which is always in fashion but needs an update.
However, it’s not all about dots. If you can wait till July, there will be a range of handbags with another design of Kusama’s in Marc Jacobs stores worldwide.
Jacobs is hoping to replicate the cult success of his cartoonish collaboration with Takashi Murakami in 2003, which produced one of the most popular – and copied – designs in the world, seen these days on everything from umbrellas to tattoos.
