Valentino’s costumes for the New York City Ballet debuted at a gala this week. Didn’t have a ticket? Rescu. has a sneak peek of the costumes…
Sarah Jessica Parker confessed that it was her idea.
The actress, on the board of the New York City Ballet, convinced Valentino to come out of five years of retirement to design this season’s costumes.
The collection of sixteen costumes for the prima ballerinas is the toast of the town after its star-studded launch this week.
It features Valentino red, but is also a celebration of the classic tulle tutu, with huge swathes of organza and a very black-and-white palette.
Ballet costumes are notoriously difficult – they have to be visible from the backs of the auditorium, graceful, suit the part and also allow for the considerable difficulties of dance.
Valentino himself seemed pleased to have been given centre stage again. “I like the idea of something romantic, for girls who want to dance and flirt.”
The full range went onstage at a gala this week, and onlookers said the dresses were spectacular.
Our favourites? The full-length showstopper on the head ballerina of the company, a one-shouldered chiffon extravaganza with huge tiers of lace, a graceful little red-and-white simple tutu, and a backless number in purples and pinks with a harlequin pattern.
