Picking the right music for an occasion is much easier said than done. The wrong soundtrack can destroy the flow of conversation or be the cause of very awkward moments.
We’ve got some advice and a few choice artists perfect for some tricky situations to Rescu. you from music disasters.
An intimate meal with a new guy
We’re girls so we know every little detail about this kind of night will be talked about, stressed about and planned. We suggest you go for something that fades into the background a bit so your new guy can still hold a conversation with you.
Try Angus & Julia Stone for chilled beats perfect for dinner table conversation. We also love The Whitest Boy Alive whose expert tunes simply fade into the background. Your music choice really does say something about you and your taste so it should come down to personal choice in the end but we suggest leaving the club anthems and pop tunes out on this occasion.
A dinner party with your best friends
Much like the previous situation, you don’t want your guests’ dinner conversation over-run by your soundtrack of choice. However, a group of girls has a very different vibe to a one-on-one dinner so we suggest you try something a little more up beat and girly.
We love Lykke Li’s spirit filled tracks from her Youth Novel album, they give a group dinner a fun tempo without being too in-your-face. Another Rescu. favourite for a girl’s night is Maggie Eckford who recently participated in the Triple J Unearthed competition. Her voice is soft with a slight country twang and her first album For What It’s Worth is filled with beautiful harmonies. Plus you have the added bonus of talking about the young starlet who isn’t as well known as other choices.
Getting Everyone Up and Dancing
If you’re hosting a party and you want everyone up and dancing, the best things you can do is make a playlist on your ipod or a few mix cds. Listening to just one artist gets boring on the dance floor so it’s best to change things up a bit.
Construct a varying playlist with all your favourite Rihanna and Katy Perry tracks, a few dance tracks from any of the Ministry of Sound compilations and a couple of old favourites like The Kinks ‘All Day and All of The Night’.
Our ultimate party track right now? M.I.A. ft Jay-Z – XXXO. It’s sure to get everyone on the d-floor!
A chilled night playing board games with friends
This sort of night calls for something in between background music and party music. Once again, you don’t want to destroy conversation flow but you also want something a bit more fun for a games night.
We love Miike Snow whose self-titled album gives any night a light hearted vibe. His unique brand of tropical chilled beats is just perfect for a night in with good friends. Also try Rescu. favourite The Strokes album Is this it. These tunes are melodic enough to make for great background music while being up beat enough to hold on their own when conversation dies down. You’re sure to get everyone singing along when Someday plays!
