We loved the runway hairstyles from Fashion Week Australia – from windswept blow outs to glamorous curls, edgy quiffs and delicate braids, there were so many hairstyles we just couldn’t wait to steal and make our own. To help you create runway ready hair, we’ve chosen our three favourite looks from fashion’s biggest week and asked the experts for their top tips on how to steal the styles.
Swarovski – Glam Curls
Swarovski was all glamorous curls wafting down the runway – perfect for wearing to a cocktail party or a night on the town. ‘There’s a very natural finish in the hair. Not too shiny not too matte, just natural,’ said Redken Hair Director, Paloma Rose Garcia (Oscar Oscar Paddington). ‘The hair is blow dried first then tonged for a natural tousled look. The waves aren’t overly polished, instead they have a more beachy look with soft shape definition.’
1. Apply a root boosting spray such from roots to ends. Using two ceramic round brushes blow dry the hair to smooth out and create a soft movement. Work with your natural hair part. Around the face blow dry the hair back, away from the face.
Try: Redken Rootful 06 ($24.95). Paloma Rose Garcia used this roost boosting product to give the models that enviable bounce and volume as they strutted the runway.
2. Using a 1 inch tong, take 1.5 inch vertical sections around the face and tong back off the face leaving half an inch out at the ends.
3. For the back lengths, start at the nape and tong the hair section horizontally in one direction. Then go onto the next horizontal section and tong in the opposite direction to create a natural, unpolished wave. Always leave half an inch at the bottom out.
4. Once all the lengths are curled, rake the hair out with your fingers.
STRATEAS.CARLUCCI – Graphic Ponytails
If you’re looking to add a twist to the classic ponytail style, you can’t go past the cool structured ponytails from the STRATEAS.CARLUCCI runway show. ‘FRACTURE is such a strong collection, I had to look at the structure and shapes that were created in the garments and how I could take these angular elements to the hair,’ said Kate McQuitty, Prema for Goldwell Hair Director.
1. Hair is prepared by applying mousse throughout, then directionally blow-dried back, giving a little volume at the roots on the top with mid-lengths and ends kept smooth.
2. Hair is then sectioned off into three parts running vertically down the head. The middle part is then broken into three segments (leaving a small section along the crown free) and secured into ponytails.
3. Divide the side sections into two parts, pulling the lower part back into the middle ponytail and the upper section to the lower ponytail, creating the criss-cross finish. Be sure to keep the lines clean and defined for added impact.
4. Take the hair along the crown and smooth back, fixing into the top ponytail.
5. Tie bottom corners of the lower and middle ponytails around the elastics to created the wrapped hair finish.
6. Run a pre-styling product through the ponytails and use flat irons to straighten.
Try: Goldwell StyleSign Sleek Perfection Thermal Spray Serum ($24.95). This spray was used for STRATEAS.CARLUCCI at fashion week to create looks that were silky, straight and lasted through the hours of preparation, and backstage madness of fashion week.
7. To add an extra boost of glamour to the look, attach a matching coloured weft to the top ponytail and straighten down. Once fixed, cut the bottom of the weft to a blunt finish.
We Are Handsome – Edgy Braids and Quiffs
We loved the cool combination of quiffs and braids created by KMS California Hair Director, Garreth Lenagh of Prema. Whether you embrace this full look, or just incorporate one aspect into your own hairstyle, you’ll be fashion forward and fabulous.
1. Prep hair with sea salt spray and styling foam, applying from root to tips.
Try: KMS HAIRPLAY Sea Salt Spray ($36.95). We love the way this spray creates tousled fullness without weighing down hair or causing your style to drop. Just spritz a small amount on your locks and feel the textural transformation.
2. Blow dry side sections of hair away from the face using a paddle brush.
3. Blow dry top and crown sections with a medium round brush, pulling up from the head.
4. Create a part from above the temples (where the head starts to curve), around to the crown and repeat on the other side… separating the top section. Secure in place with a clip.
5. Apply a small amount of smoothing lotion from mid lengths to ends.
6. ‘French Braid’ the remaining hair vertically down the back of the head and secure with clear elastic.
7. Release the top section and lightly tease hair at the roots…starting at the crown section and working forward.
8. Lightly brush the top section to conceal teasing, and mist with hairspray to secure the final shape.
10. Secure remaining hair into the base of the ponytail for ultimate neatness.
French Braid
1. Start by taking a section from the top of the head. Separate this section into 3 strands crossing right over middle, and then left over middle (basic plait technique).
2. Switch all of the strands over to your left hand and keep strands separated.
3. Gather a small, even section from the right side of the head with right hand and add it to the right strand.
4. Bring the strand (just added to) over to the middle, and bring the middle strand to the right.
5. Gather a section of hair from the left side of the head. Add this to the left strand.
6. Bring the left strand over to the middle, and bring the middle section to the left.
7. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until there is no hair available to add.
