Vibeke Murphy, a holistic chiropractor and yoga instructor, believes spinal health is essential to living an energised, balanced life. “When your spine is aligned and supported, the benefits ripple through your entire body, improving everything from digestion to energy levels and mental clarity,” she explains.

Women’s spines face specific challenges throughout life. Hormonal changes during pregnancy and menopause can weaken ligaments and lead to joint instability, making the spine more vulnerable to strain. Pregnancy often brings lower back pain, while menopause increases the risk of osteoporosis, affecting posture and mobility.

“Women’s spinal health isn’t just a medical issue; it’s a reflection of how we carry ourselves through different phases of life,” says Vibeke. “Understanding how hormonal shifts and daily habits affect the spine is key to creating lasting solutions.”

How Poor Posture Impacts Whole-Body Health

Posture is more than an aesthetic issue. Slouching or forward head posture can compress the chest cavity, restrict breathing, and reduce oxygen intake. This, in turn, can lead to fatigue, stress, and even digestive problems.

“Poor posture places unnecessary strain on muscles and organs, disrupting systems like breathing and digestion,” Vibeke explains. “When we correct these imbalances, we see a significant improvement in energy and overall function.”

A Holistic Approach to Spinal Health

Many women seek professional care only after experiencing pain, but Vibeke emphasises the importance of proactive visits. “Chiropractic care is not just about treating discomfort. It’s about alignment, prevention, and helping your body function at its best,” she says.

She highlights key benefits of chiropractic care may include: Improved alignment to reduce muscle tension and joint strain,enhanced nerve function to address issues like urinary incontinence and frozen shoulder and prevention of pain and imbalances before they lead to chronic discomfort

Chiropractic adjustments may also play a role in managing life-stage challenges. During pregnancy, patients report it can alleviate pelvic misalignment and lower back pain. Post-menopause, it may support mobility and reduce the risk of fractures associated with osteoporosis.

The benefits of a healthy spine extend far beyond the back. Proper alignment can improve breathing, enhance digestion, and increase energy levels, leading to better overall wellness.

“Think of your spine as the central pillar of your body,” says Vibeke. “When it’s strong and aligned, your entire body works more efficiently, allowing you to feel energised and balanced.”

Regular exercise is critical for maintaining a healthy spine. Vibeke recommends incorporating movements like:
  • Plank to build core stability and support spinal alignment
  • Cat-Cow Stretch to improve flexibility and relieve tension
  • Wall Angels to correct rounded posture and align the shoulders
Ergonomic Adjustments

Creating an ergonomic workspace can reduce the effects of prolonged sitting. Position screens at eye level, use lumbar cushions, and ensure your feet are flat on the ground.

Mindful Breaks

Taking short movement breaks every hour prevents stiffness and improves circulation. Simple stretches like chin tucks or shoulder rolls can be done at your desk for immediate relief.

Spinal health is about more than managing back pain. By addressing posture, incorporating regular exercise, and seeking chiropractic care, women can enhance their overall quality of life.
